Head Studs-what are these?
Hey,
I'm rebuilding the top end of my 3.6 turbo motor and was looking at replacing the head studs as they could be a problem down the road. However, the ones I have in there are highly magnetic and I believe them to be steel. They have a stamp at the top and I've tried to take a picture, but it just won't come out. Therefore, I've done a 2nd grade level drawing. Anyway, does anyone know who the manufacturer is? I'm happy to put new ones in (raceware, supertech, ARP, etc.) but am wondering if they already have them in. They are threaded at the top and bottom only, no plastic coating and they are black. Let me know if you know. ![]() |

Same studs I have on my stock 1992 NA 3.6L. I believe they are the steel studs from the factory. They look to be in good conditiion and I am not planning on replacing them. But I am sure experts will chime in soon...

Some mid 90s turbos were built with steel studs because the Porsche engineers were at a loss for what to do about the catastrophe of Dilivar.
I had my 3.5 400+ hp turbo built with Supertec Head studs and never looked back. I'm pretty sure our host sells them.

supertec
I spoke with Henry at Supertek on Friday and he was running low on the head studs but did have some coming in a couple weeks. He was nice enough to tell me, as in honest, that the steel head studs wouldn't break and Waynes book "How to rebuild 911 engines..." confirmed it. Although his head studs are stronger and avoids the potential loosening of the nuts due to the better design and washer/nut system. Thanks for the input guys.
