Midnight Smoker

I am a little hesitant to post over here on this forum. You guys are pros and I am just an okay parts swapper. But, I really, really need some help so please excuse the noob post.

1979 Turbo motor with about 30k miles on it that sat on a floor for about 18 months (I swapped it into a 1986 911).

The motor has an intermittent smoking problem. Like it will smoke like heck at idle if I start it after a 5 minute shutdown. And will continue to smoke until I put it under load with a few hards pulls to about 5k rpm. Then it clears up and runs with no smoke. If I leave it idle, it will eventually start to smoke again.

At first I thought it was because I did the initial re-break in with 5w30. So I put in 15w50 Mobil 1. It still smokes. Once it gets smoking again, it will smoke hard on deceleration. I thought this pointed to valve guides. But, now I am thinking it might be that the turbo is shot. Actually, I have no freaking idea what is causing the smoke, hence my post here.

Tomorrow I plan to swap the K27 for a K26 to see if that relieves the smoking issue. I will see if that helps.

But, short of that, are there any other ideas on what could be causing the pipes to belch blue smoke? (I went through every part of the scavenge system already and made sure it will "put a hickey on my thumb").

Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

If You can pull the exhaust you should be able to have a look at the exhaust valve guides. from there you should be able to see if they're leaking or not.

I'm no pro either, but sounds like turbo to me cuz if it were valve guide seals it would smoke more often. Sounds like oil is pooling in the turbo at idle (when scav pump isn't sucking hard) and then is being blown out the hot side creating the smoke screen out the muffler.

It may smoke with both turbos if the pump allows oil to pool at idle. What does your sump/drain tank setup look like?

DSP,

Check for a loose oil line on turbo, small air leak makes big problem.

When a turbo was going/ let loose in another car of mine it smoked like a *****! When the turbo is out check for shaft play, but since you are replacing I guess that will be a good test.
