My engine marks it's spot when it parks
1985 911 euro. I havent seen a euro trans in some years..so neat with the oil pump and cooler.
I had the hurricane in all day Saturday so church was closed to keep people off the roads this morning. Started to project on the car about noon and I made good head way. Some pictures of the removal Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1314584319.jpg I have never seen this setup for cruise control but someone took the time. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1314584441.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1314584501.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1314584560.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1314584620.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1314584682.jpg |
I started cleaning off the shroud and injection and its always interesting what I find. Each engine has a story of its own so the pictures will tell the story...
Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1314752858.jpg Some blow by on the top of the heads, not torqued properly. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1314752922.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1314753104.jpg The chain has good running clearance before the tensioner tops out. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1314753193.jpg |
Worked a little while and I managed to crack it open.

Still the man!!!
Thanks for the review. It reinforces what to look for and how important it is to get things right. Keith |
Bruce:
What are your thoughts on re-using the bearings? They still look pretty good from these pictures, except of course for the IS bearings being down to the copper. Which is normal. How many miles on the engine? Also, are those lower head studs steel and did they get scrapped from the bad torque on the heads? What will you do about those? thanks |

Ed,
Im resealing the engine and doing a valve job. I open the case so I can tell the owner what he has. These cars have changed hands a couple times through the years and no one really knows exactly what they have, std crank, dirt in the oil, when was the last valve job done? When the owner gets it back, he has a photo history of his engine, resealed to center case, new intermediate shaft bearings, chain rails, dilivars removed for steel, a valve job with guides as needed. When I open the engines the owner already knows that if the bottom isnt nice, such as scored bearings from dirt, other defects that need to be answered, the additional cost will fall on him. From the photos, this engine wasnt all it could be with leaking heads and oil dripping on the heat boxes and spotting the floor after driving. The owner gets back the car, clean engine compartment and suspension area to the torque tube, clean transmission, and a clean, resealed engine with some wear parts replaced so he can feel comfortable with the car for the next 100K miles Bruce |
Bruce:
I understand completely. Your customer is very lucky to have this history and peace of mind. |
I took everything out and labeled it, bagged it up to go back exactly where bearings came from. I dipped the engine in the fresh degreaser, let it dry and them out to the pressure washer.
Wound up looking good. Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315085650.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315085717.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315085789.jpg |
I got the heads back yesterday and assembled them last evening. Wife took a weekend to see son and daughter in Ga. I seem to get a lot done when I m home alone and its not 100+ in the garage.
I always build the heads as a sub assemblies, ready to install with valve lash already done on the table. Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315097904.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315097969.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315098033.jpg |
You would never know there was 133,000 miles on that engine. Looks great Bruce.

The oil cooler has been holding the test pressure for several days so its good to go back on.
I pulled the fork off the trans to clean and lube the vertical arm and clean the trans from the picture of the engine and trans originally removed. I ve got the trans all together and ready to go when the engine is ready. Loaded up and down to the high pressure car wash to clean the oil under the rear of the car. I have to admit, it wasnt as bad as some I have seen.

Well, this afternoon I had the gasket sets and parts for this and the next engine. I persevered thrrough the early evening to get things done.
I got the P&Cs installed, the studs put in. Its easier to install the circlips with out the bottom row of studs in place. Then I installed the studs and then the heads. I have the heads torqued and the cams timed at 1.40 each side. Thats the end of the evening in the garage. Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315622666.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315622735.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315622829.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315622902.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315622965.jpg |
I rechecked the cam timing and valve adjustment and closed up the covers. The injectors are out being tested and rebuilt. I redid the fuel lines from the filter to the fuel rails and when the injectors come back the top will be close to finish.

So are you using the regular "blue" o-rings that come with the set on the case through-bolts?
|
Yes I use the blue. I tried the green ones and didnt care for them. Lube the blue ones on install and there is no problem.
Bruce |
Well, I m still waiting on the injectors and the powder coat paint was getting in today for the fan and housing.
Well, I got several hours in today so I m closer, Got the new flywheel sensors and HTS installed and everything in place for the injection. Todays arrival, injectors and there will be an improvement up to 6.6% over what they were. Not bad considering they are 26 years old.
