Upgraded oil pump: protrudes from case??

Hello all,

I'm finalizing the long block and seem to have one final issue: the oil pickup mesh/sucking piece of my upgraded oil pump (Carrera pump) protrudes too much from the case. Even the modified cover will not fit. To get the picture: I would need a aluminium ring of approx 8mm thickness to clear the mesh of the pump when attaching the cover.

It looks like the suction pipe is simply too long?

Any thoughts why this would happen and has anyone experienced this before?

(and I thought chapter 9 of Wayne's book would be smooth sailing...)

I'm no expert, but the spacer sounds like the easiest solution and the 8mm deeper sump should hurt anything cuz you're just making a larger puddle for the pump.

Another option if you can pull the suction pipe outta the pump you could cut it down to a size that fits.

Whattever you decide to do take your time and do it right cuz that's the heart of your motor

The pipe is bolted to the pump and I don't want to mess around in the clean and shiny case...

I've done another search and found someone else with the same problem a few months ago. What is a relieve for me, is that it appears to be a common issue (appearantly unknow to my local wrench who supplied me the pump).

It seems that there a covers available that clear the pump (Rennwerks), but I guess a spacer ring will work just as well.

I'm very curious if anyone else has had to fix this issue and how it was resolved??

Rennwerks sump plate

Would this solve your problem?

Yes, I guess so, thanks! But as I'm in Europe I'm not keen on the delivery times etc. I'm now having a spacer ring created and try that first.

Cheers

Dennis

A spacer is a source for leaks

The standard solution is the "dished" sump plate

Yes, I'm aware of that now. I have bought one and it didn't fit, I need the more expensive 'super dished' cover. It won't hurt to try the spacer approach with the 2 silicone gaskets that I have, first.

The standard dished sump plate for the late 3.0 liter should have worked as is. Your oil pump pickup is bent or distorted.

Well, looks like some manufacturing error or something. Found someone else on the board that experienced the same issue. The pump was brandnew. The horizontal piece of the suction pipe is just that: horizontal, not bent. All I can conclude is that the vertical piece of the suction pipe is too long or the 'cup + mesh' at the end of it are incorrectly tacked on.

I'm not going to tear down the entire engine again to check the pump pickup and shorten it.

The end is spun steel amd that is the part that distorts. Post pics if you can. You can easily tweak this back until it is centered.

Although you do not really need to disassemble to fix, I do agree you should inspect the oil pump for anything out of sorts.
