I am not an expert, but as an additional data point, my motor (108K!) exhibited VERY similar appearance on the intermediate and mains, with the exception of copper showing on the thurst surface (as shown in the last pic... Mine did not show that...

It will be interesting to hear commentary from the exerts!

Glad to hear wear appears to be normal. What causes the I/S bearings to wear so unevenly?

Back to the teardown.

The only oil issues I have had with this engine appeared to come from the cylinder head/camshaft housing.




Here is the disassembled version.




Normally, would this type of leak really concern anyone? Everything seemed tight, so would this just be a small seep one could live with?

This is the "seapage" between cam boxes and heads, use a good high heat sealant. May I also suggest Supertec studs. I recently had the broken stud discovery on my low milage (69k) 84 Carrera. I tried to replace only the broken one (I'm a cheapo). While the engine was on the stand waiting to be installed I heard a loud "ping", you guessed it, another one popped. After much research and looking I went with Supertec, and when you consider you get nuts and washers very compettive price. Very impressive quality, and how do you beat lifetime warranty, no others even come close. Plus they were developed and backed by Henry Schmidt.

Good job so far Tie Rod. Keep up the good work. Love you hydraulic lift in the garage, who makes it? Looks invaluable for working on the porsche. Also, I live in Winchester, Ky what part of KY you from?

pharlap71- Thanks for the input. I am planning on upgrading all my head studs.....lets just say this is the tip of the "slippery slope" phenomena . I think I have settled on Supertec. Seems to be a real nice design. I like the finer threads for torquing concept. I guess I will have to dig through the Ultimate sealant thread for a good seal there.

Panzer Slayer- In Louisville. The lift is one of the best purchases I have made. It is not a top of the line model, but I have had no complaints for my use. Came from completehydraulic.com If you look on the right side of that pic you can see one of my 6' jack stands. I have four of them for a little insurance when any of my vehicles are over my head just in case anything decides to fail.

Stripped Rocker Shaft Removal

Removing the rockers from the cs housing was going well until the very last on on #4. Thankfully it was not on #5. I pre-loosened all the bolts before removing the heads from the engine. Much better support for all the force required to break them free. Unfortunately on #4, both the allens stripped before I was able to break it loose. Swell.....

Time to test my freehand machining skills. I started small and worked my way up to a 7/32" The Pilot Points worked very well.


Progressively getting bigger. Center looks good.
