Engine stand adaptors

I am getting ready to rebuild my newly aquired 73.5 911T targa motor. I have an engine stand that has at least a 1000 lb capacity, but I think it is 2000 lbs. I got it used from a guy who had rebuilt a v-8. Anyway, I read that it may be better to use a Porsche yolk or engine stand adapter. Is it really necessary or is my stand strong enough. It has the adjustable brackets with short standoffs.

The P201 tool is very much worth it in my opinion. Some get by without it. More commentary recently...

It's "yoke." "Yolk" is the yellow stuff in the middle of an egg.

Without the adaptor you will crush some of the metal at the bell housing and it might keep the trans from seating properly. 73 is magnesium and brittle.

Thanks for info. I will look for an adapter ring or yoke. One more question...Can I use the transmission mounting studs from the engine or replace them with hardened steel ones to attach to engine stand?

Aluminum cases you can do without it in most scenarios but mag cases they must be used to disperse the load better. All in all it does make assembly of the case halves easier regardless.

You can use the transmission mount hardware from the car-- it doesn't need to be replaced with something stronger for use with the yoke. One trick is to bolt the yoke to the engine, then hoist it up into place on the stand, which is a little easier than trying to line up the studs while the engine's in the air.

Ok, here's a dumb one...how do you determine if your case is aluminum or mag? Cases in question are an 83 SC Cab and an 87 930.

I'm preparing for my first drop on the SC. I have a 4-point, adjustable yoke on my engine stand and I'm not sure if I should get the adapter.

Thanks,
Steve

anyone use the $90 one found on ebay? is it just as strong or spend the extra $100 and buy the one from here?

I have the 5 arm from eBay. It is solid and works well. It fit very tight around my bellhousing lip. Tiny bit of grinding and I am a happy camper. If you are only doing this once or twice this one is fine. If I did this for a living I would get the better one.
