Stored motor

I have a 2.2S engine that has sat in the car, outside (northeast), for at least 7 years. I have the complete build sheet for the engine, dyno charts, receipts, etc, The engine was very fresh, and strong running before I let it sit. The engine has less than 5K street miles and less than 300 race miles.

I am unable to determine if it has Biral or Nikasil cylinders but it does have piston squirters and time-certs.

I have read all of the previous threads on similar situations but most of those did not know the condition of the engine. The engine will be coming out of the current chassis and going into another. I have a lift and am somewhat mechanically inclined but have not split a case and all previous (non Porsche) engine work involved short blocks done by a machine shop.

I see three possible scenarios and welcome the groups opinion or alternate scenarios.

1. Try starting in the current chassis following normal procedures for this type of thing.

2. Drop engine, put it on a stand, soak cylinders with engine vertical, reinstall in original chassis and try and start

3. Drop engine, disassemble, re-assemble, replacing parts as necessary

Thank you for your help and yes I know I did the car wrong....

Garage
Id think the internals would be ok.
Id also think that any seals will likely need to be replaced.

Id probably do the engine stand thing (#2) just to really be able to check it all good and make decisions from there. Based on what I find in #2 could move to #3... or not...

#1 is probably the last approach id take.

I would try to start it and drive it.

Off the top of my head.....

1. Make sure the engine turns over by hand.....two complete rotations
2. Drain and refill oil with a filter change
3. Drain gas tank and fuel lines
4. Change fuel filter
5. Refill with fresh fuel and some injector cleaner
6. Recharge or change battery
7. Run starter with coil wire unplugged and confirm good oil pressure
8. Try starting it.
9. If it starts and runs...Drive it and see how it does.

Good luck

The current chassis is not particularly driveable, so it will have to come out either before it runs again or after.

I think I am going to go with option 2. This will allow me to get everything a lttle cleaner, soak it longer/better and make compresison testing, etc. easier.

I'm going to start the process. I'll report back the good bad or ugly in a few weeks.

Thanks for the advice.

Marvel mystery oil in the cylinders for a few days. drain the case thereafter as it will certainly leak down. Tip motor 1-3 facing up and fill the cylinders a bit, let it soak for a day or so. do the same for the 4-6. This will ensure the rings are freed up and you don't score the bores.

DEFINITELY pressurize the oiling system before you crank it. you can do this by taking a clean fluid suction pump(harbor freight version works fine) and using it in reverse. fill it with oil and force the oil through the main galley numerous places to do this from on the motor. This will force oil down to the bearings and cam journals, etc

turn over by hand a bit thereafter.

Good luck
