Help me pick a distributor
I'm 50% of the way though a complete rebush/reseal of my engine. 3.0L SC engine, SSIs, 2 in 1 out, stock cam for now (will go with a 964ish cam this summer). CIS for now, maybe EFI later. No emission testing, going for power over efficiency.
I have the following distributors in hand to play with: 1980 SC dizzy with both advance and retard on the pod. POD IS BAD, does not work. 1979 dizzy with advance only on pod, was told it worked fine. Which would give me the best advance curve for 90% street 10% track power? 1980 recurved, pod removed 1979 run with pod 1979 recurved with pod removed or... 1980 dizzy with the pod from the 1979. I can get part numbers if needed. EDIT: 1979 dizzy is part #0 237 306 001 Thanks!

Mike,
An stock 80 SC with CIS will perform best with a stock 80 SC distributor on pump fuel. The vacuum advance and retard are irrelevent to measured performance and the only thing you will lose is overheating at idle and around 5% fuel economy at a steady 50 mph cruise. Make sure the lambda system is working correctly and set the duty cycle to 30-40 dwell for the best WOT performance. You may be able to bump the static timing up a few degrees, but this will depend on your fuel. Getting the hot breather air/oil out of the intake is worth a few octane points. If and when you ditch the small runner CIS and change the cams, and raise the high rpm VE at the expense of the low speed VE, then using the 79 or recurving the 80 for more high speed advance will have an effect.
