964 Top End Rebuild of 3.6 DIY questions

I did search for this before I posted this question.

Does anyone have a link or can provide information on how to:

1. Jack up the 964 Targa to be able to remove the engine. I plan on supporting it on blocks. Is that a good idea?

2. Top End Rebuild - does anyone have a good thread on this including setting the timing when assembling the motor back together. I plan on keeping it stock.

Thank you,
Dmark9

Great site. 993 and 964 are similar in many ways.

Get copies of Wayne Dempsey's and Jerry Woods' books on 911 engines. Both books have good explanations of both topics you mentioned. I also agree that PCA workshop has a nicely documented article on the rebuild of a 3.6 motor.

Make sure you're loading them in the correct direction.

Thank you all. The 993 rebuild is very helpful. Let's see if I turn this paperweight into a nice daily driver.

If you do this I strongly recommend an engine stand and a yoke. You can get a cheap 1000 pound engine stand from Harbor Freight like this one for about $50 with coupon.

A decent yoke can be had for about $80. Here's one:

TheSamba.com :: VW Classifieds - VW Porsche 4 arm engine stand yoke - USA made

I've used both of these on my 993 rebuild and it makes the job so much easier!

Also, get Wayne's book mentioned above. An invaluable resource. Although it only goes up to model year 1989 the principles are the same for the 964 including the timing. The timing is not that hard and the 964 has superior timing design vs. the 993. I back-dated my 993 to the 964 method and parts.

Thanks Green 993. I bought the engine yoke today based on your recommendation.

I will know attempt to fix exhaust valve for Cylinder 5 only and put it back together and fix leaks along the way. I'll see if that's possible and see how many more miles I can get before I need to do a full top end.

Thank you.

Great! You are on your way! A couple of tips. The yoke usually comes with one small sleeve. You'll need a few more as shown in the photo. The threads are only at the end so you need the sleeves to take up the space.

Second, the yoke comes without a hole at the end where it attaches to the stand. I drilled a hole straight thru and then got a threaded bar about two feet long and put a nut on one end. You'll need to do this to be able to spin the motor 360. This will make more sense when you get the yoke. I'll try to take a pic and post it here.
