Engine Dyno
Short of a few minor things that I'm waiting on from Pelican, my 930 motor rebuild is done. I'm toying with the idea of trying to find a local shop with an engine dyno and running the motor on it before embarking on installing it back into the car. Can't see any downside (other than expense) but was curious to see if you guys generally go down that path or just put the motor back into the car and fire her up. My thinking is that it would be helpful to have a skilled mechanic there during initial start up and that it would be a good opportunity to try and fine tune the adjustments to the WUR.

The definitive part of your thinking is to find a shop that really is competent.
Taking the engine to just any old dyno facility would be just a waste of money. A dyno can be used to quickly dial in the A/R ratios and set the rev limiters so that when instlled you would be very close to ...if not spot on..for all adjustments. Good thinking as far as I am concerned. Bob |

I agree not just any dyno shop is a valid reply, but a dyno before install makes lots of sense to me as I have access to a dyno shop here in SoCal that has had many Porsche engines on the pump. Getting it up to temperature, getting the rings settled in, checking for oil pressure and leaks before getting it in the car are the other benefits. Getting the A/F ratio and ignition dialed in is better done on the dyno where you can control the situation. It can all be done on a chassis dyno too but not so easy to run the valve lash and re torque the heads and such after you get some heat in it. I would think you can find a shop in the Bay area Woods comes to mind. If you want to bring it down to SoCal drop me a PM I will do some introductions for you. |

Jerry Woods rebuilt my 3.5 twin plug turbo motor and my 3.4 twin plug n/a motor a few years back. They dyno all the motors they build. A worth while investment to make sure everything is dialed in correctly. Also good to know where the max h.p. and torque are. I went down both times and watched them make a couple of runs after it was dialed in.
