964 Crankshaft Difference

Hi All

I found a used crankshaft (i.e. unknown year) to replace my damaged 1990 crankshaft but there's a difference at the harmonic damper end. My crank has about a 1/2" of tapered shaft at the tip whereas the crankshaft I found does not. Are there 2 different versions of harmonic dampers - with a straight hole along the full length and another with a taper along half the length of the hole? I also noticed the index hole is 180 degrees out.

Your responses are appreciated

The taper end is the significant difference in the 964. The 993 does not have a taper but the appearance is different from the previous years. Does not have a taper end.
Possibility the crank is a 930 with the straight nose, typical of the 90 and later 930. The locator pin for the pulley on a 930 would be to the left side on the pulley end, 180 out as mentioned

964 is stamped on the crank and the journals/webs are dimensional the same as my original 964 crank. The fact that the webs are the same thickness (i.e. I believe the 993 webs are 9.4mm thicker than a 964) lead me to believe it was a 964 crank and historic documents indicate the same. So I suspect it is a 930 crank as you mentioned, provided the 964 stamping is imaterial and if that's the case can I put a 930 harmonic damper on it?

Hi All

On further investigation I was able to determine that the crank in question is likely from an M64/50 engine or 1993/94 3.6 Turbo. It appears the two cranks are the same (i.e. other than the section of the shaft where the harmonic dampers mount) internally as far as journal diameters and throws are concerned. Even though Porsche lists 2 different P/N's for the harmonic balancers they do not differentiate between the 2 cranks and list them under the same P/N 964-102-021-04. Which coincidently or not, the last five digits of the P/N (i.e. 02104) are stamped on both cranks. The throws (i.e. length and orientation) on both my 1990 normally aspirated M64/01 - 3.6 crank and the one in question (i.e. M64/50 - 3.6 Turbo ) appear to be the same, but can anyone confirm this, by providing specs (i.e. or point me to where I can find them -possibly a PET reference) on the 2 engines regarding stroke?

All responses are appreciated
