I wrote this thread on the 996/997 Forum but I thought I'd see if this might be better since its concerns rebuilding. My Bad!
So I bought my first Porsche - 2002 C4S. A friend sold it to me for a very good price after she described it having a really bad sound in the engine. After doing my search on the internet - Alas, the IMS bearing issue! I took it to a local SoCal rebuilder (won't say the name), signed the papers to do the work, and THEN I researched them! I usually do my homework but I was too excited to get it running. After searching your Forum and others I found they are not very reputable - some angry customers out there. I'm sick to my stomach. I went to the shop today and told them to stop all work, don't do another thing and I want to cancel my order. Without any real hassle, the head honcho said no problem but he needed time to gather all the parts and get the block from the shop that was boring it out to a 3.8. Now here is my question. Does anyone know how I can find out if the engine block I get back is mine - I didn't take the number off it before I had them take out the motor. Second, is there some kind of parts list that I can print that I can inventory the parts I get back. I'm freaking out that I'm not gonna get some old worn out parts that I'll have to replace or not all the parts will be returned. Also, any makings on the fuel injection system that I can match to my car? Sorry for such a long thread but I'm very worried I'm gonna take it in the shorts Big Time, well, more than I already have . . . ![]()

Sorry to hear that. Since its a fairly newer car I would give Porsche a call and the should all the parts and number that belongs in that car. I start there. I've hear nothing remote good about them. Good luck.

MM sucks. Only way to know if engine number is right is the COA. As far as parts go, check out the parts book. Your dealer will probably print out all the pages for you.

JRBennett - Thanks, I appreciate the info but how do you know the exact engine/serial number without a VIN? I'm still dealing with the "rebuilder" as we haven't come to an agreement as to what I owe him for "work done". I will check the engine block number and compare it to what info I get from you, the Porsche Dealer and/or if I can get the COA prior to receiving my engine block back.
LarryM - I can afford the car! I just need the info ASAP so when I pick up the motor, which is in pieces, I can at least feel confident that I have my engine's block back. Still won't be able to prove all the rest of the parts are actually from my motor. I'm a bit worried I'm gonna get back parts from a engine with more mileage or damaged parts and not ALL the parts. I saw you posted your VIN in a different thread.

JRBennett - Yes that is the VIN. Thanks for the Info. I'll use that when I pick up my disassembled engine. I asked that he not put anything back together or crate anything so I can carefully inventory the parts. May I ask where you got the information?

Now to search the threads for a reputable rebuilder in SoCal who can tell me if the parts seem to have all come from the same engine. Will a mechanic be able to detect wear patterns on parts and make judgement as if those wear patterns match? And/Or if the wear patterns are indicative of an engine with 60K miles? This rebuilder also said my cylinder walls are crystallizing, does that make sense to anyone?
