recommend me a stand
About to begin on my first 911 engine building adventure. I have the proper P201 tool for holding the engine. Now I just need a stand to put it in. It seems there is quite a variety out there, different shapes, sizes, and carrying capacity, 750 lb, 1000 lb, 1250 lb, etc.
Is there any stand in particular that's preferred or better suited for a 911 engine? One that's of better build quality than the others? Or do I just head over to Harbor Freight and get the cheapest one? Do they all have the same sized bore for accepting the P201 tool? ![]() FWIW I had my eye on this one, for its 4 wheels, tool tray, and heavy capacity: Sunex SUN8258 Engine Stand 1250Lb--Tools-Tool Sets-Specialty Tool Sets

I like the kind that has 2 front legs....it is heavier duty than the single types...and allows you to get the engine on what ever lift you use to remove it from the car right up to the stand.
If you get the right lift (mine goes up to 32") you can do the drop single handed ( but try to get help just for safety sake! Good luck Bob

I am in the middle of doing the 3.6 out of my 993. Have had various stands over the years.. Do not waste your money on an expensive stand.
I bought the 4 wheeled stand from Harbor Freight and it works perfectly. The P201 receiver fits perfectly. This stand is good for about 1000 pounds So the 911 motor is light by comparison. HF sometimes runs sales for about $60. You just cant. beat that. The 4 wheel set up is more stable than the 3 wheel stands. |

I've got a couple of stands, this one I use for my inline 4 cylinder race engine, and is perfectly good with a custom-made mounting bracket; breaks down easily for storage, etc....but...even when fully "dressed" this is not a heavy engine.
When I came to doing the 964 Turbo engine strip/rebuild, a) this stand capacity wasn't anywhere near that predicted weight for this project, and b) there's no way I'm chancing a 3-leg stand when every other operation is helped by rotating it. So I happened across an eBay deal and got this one ---> Sealey 900kgs stand IIRC, paid about 2/3rds the list price, it was an ex-demo stand, a few little scuffs but is absolutely spot-on for what I was after. Way over the top, but for the money I paid....Even with the engine complete straight out of the car, it shirks the weight, is uber-stable and nice to wheel around without fear of it toppling. I also use the full basket engine mount (from our hosts)....all I would say is that although the spindle diameter is right for the stand, the holes in the spigot for locking the rotation don't line up by about 20mm. I turned-up an ally collar to space the basket out a little, and is now fine. Have no idea where I'm going to store it when the project is complete! Light it ain't. HTH, S

Lupin and others, 8 years ago I took Jerry Woods engine building class...very good.
But I also asked to copy his engine stands, he said not a problem. So I had a number of these made, they are great, easily hold the biggest turbo's, very nice aluminum pan to catch oil and parts ( helps keep the shop clean). I can check to see if the price is anything close to what I paid then $350.00 plus shipping. I'm just starting my build on the 2.2e/s so thanks in advance for all the great information you've posted.
