2.2 pitons and cyliner info
rebuilding my 71 t and some of the cylinders are badly pitted is there a way to re-bore and install oversize pistons...does anyone make/ sell them? thanks , ben

Overzise from Mahle is not available. You can purchase custom oversize from JE or standard oversize from Wössner, but for around the same price (including the work on your old cylinders and new rings) you can get a full P&C set from JE or AA. I personnally bought new Mahle 2.2 P&C's but I don't now if they are easily available in the US and they don't come cheap.

Its easier to buy a used set and you can move up the compression to E which gives you the Brial cylinders.

clarify please..i assume you mean a used set of E P&Cs i thought you could not reuse or bore them as the coating was different etc. after running cost for the up grade with the new pistons what do you think that would be (range)? i have had no luck buying used P&Cs as i have recently purchased 2 sets that were said to be "within" spec only to find they were within spec for paper weights. still trying to figure out a good and relatively inexpensive way to rebuild my motor..so any other information would be most appreciated.:D ben |

U made same mistakes like i did. I have bought also used 911 E heads, cylinder and pistons once. Their value was paper weight without doing LOT of machinery. I bought those AA cylinders and JE pistons. They are fitting perfect. My engine is still under construction:-) i will spend one year birthday soon. After engine rebuilding i am starting renovation body, hope it wont last many years, Brakes and suspension is ok now. There is now cheap way making engine rebuild when you own Porsche:-) |
Ben, you have a PM

You can have your cast iron cylinders bored to 85 mm and buy a set of higher compression 85 mm JE pistons.

Ben,
If you can find a good 6th cylinder in the same height group, I have 6 excellent condition Mahle 84mm T pistons and 5 excellent cylinders. Low mileage is documented. I am re-building my 2.2L T engine to S specs. I'm not sure it was such a great idea now that the cost of the upgrade is becoming clear, but... I'm committed at this point. I had the pistons & cylinders listed in pelican classifieds a couple months ago: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/660984-fs-2-2l-engine-parts-w-guarantee.html send me email if interested or if you need any more info. -Paul |
Iwent the JE route, bored outthe T cylinders to 2.3l(86.5mm?)Was able to bump the compression to S spec.Bang for the buck. Was able to port the heads n manifolds, get solex cams(Thanks Tom!),bullet proof the caseand rods, and still walk away ahead the game then if I went the mahle route. If youc an live with non oem pistons, pins, and rings, its a viable alternative.Couldnt afford Pauls route(The right way),just way too much coin for a compression bump and birals.Kinda wishI stuck with my stock pistons, they are all within spec. Its nice to have choices!

Anybody got a photo of a 2.2 S piston. I'm dismantling a 71 2.2 engine now and I think the Pistons are "S". The engine has 67 "S" cams. I got the engine from the original owner (71 914-6). The PO did a rebuild many years ago and I think everything is to S specs. The pistons have a high dome and valve relief both sides. Thanks

Inside the 2.2 S piston it will say Mahle 84P84 casting.

2.2 S pistons
Thanks Tom and Bruce. My pistons say 89P8+. Do you guys think these are S pistons? The domes look like Tom's photos.

Your pistons are marked 84P8. These are 2.2S pistons |
