soda blasting (crank case and all)?
 

I decide to do totally rebuild the engine, and want to make it look nice again as well.

Obviously one of the previous owners had the piston replaced and the cylinders bored to mm but left a piece of one old piston in the crank case (pic. 2).

I want to re-plate all the yellow galvanized parts (if not replaced) and think about soda blasting the aluminum parts.

Is there any reason not to do so, including the crank case?
And does anybody have an address for doing so in Miami?

Don't try this at home

I did mine and I'm very happy with the results. Some on this board have concerns about oil galley contamination but in my experience you can either plug or cover the oil holes or drill the galley plugs for cleaning.

check into dry ice blasting, no resides except the crud coming off the engine

looks great what you did!
But i will have it done by a company down here, they look good and i hope to do more work with them, they also do powder coating and i will my suspension have powder coated.

i did dry ice on a project in Austria, a MB 300 SEL 6.3, but i have to say it has it's limitations. I would only use it on thinks like a gearbox, not dismantled. There it makes sense, otherwise it has not the "cleaning power" of the soda.

bb65 not enough punch to get it clean, to bad. One of the problems with soda blasting is that it is corrosive to certain metals. everything must be removed prior to blasting and cleaning after is a must. but it is water soluble. That is one dirty engine BTW!

I bought the car at an auction (internet) and still wonder what happend to it. It has brand new pistons but leaking like a shower head....

Oil was dripping out while standing.
