What Do You Think of This Case Sealing Job?
What do you think of this job of sealing the case on my 964? Note the hardened stuff that has dried hard, and sealed up the oil supply groove in one of the photos?
If you want to know what this sealant is so you can be sure to avoid ever using it on your own car (or someone else's car), perhaps Bruce Abbott AKA Flat6PAC can provide that information, this is exactly how we found my motor after he had worked on it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As would be expected given the sealant observed collected in the middle of the screen on the oil pump, the oil pump was full of the hardened sealant. Following a full cleaning, it was found that one of the shaft bushings in the previously perfectly operating oil pump was damaged. Given that the motor had dangerously low oil pressure at idle following the recent rebuild Mr. Abbott performed, the only prudent course of action seems to be replace the oil pump. By the way other than advising me that if I was not happy with the low oil pressure at idle, I should just run thicker oil, Bruce has done nothing to resolve the problems with his workmanship. |

Wayne does not provide this forum for litigation-- any admissions against interest could be picked up by Google search and cached forever.
If you want opinions about your problem there are many members here who are happy to comment. If you want to air a commercial dispute there are civic forums that provide that opportunity. Let's give the forum the opportunity to comment on this with our usual tone of civility. That said, as an engine rebuilder myself, the material used does not look like 574, appears to be much less viscous, has adhered to the case where 574 floats away in the oil, and appears to have been applied much more than one would typically apply 574.

The "oil supply groove" shown is not an oil supply groove, as it does not send oil anywhere other than back into the sump. Its function seems to be a bit of a mystery. My take is that, because the through case passage it surrounds has oil under pressure, the groove is there to intercept any oil which might leak out of that passage, and send it harmlessly back into the sump, and not allow it to work its way to the exterior of the case half joint.
One supposes it has some usefulness and importance, because I believe it is machined in, and thus costs something to create. But that is a guess only. And not relevant to the excess of sealant shown. I've always tried to be especially careful with the 574 in that area, just in case the groove is important. |

It looks like Threebond/Yamabond 1104 which is a perfectly good case sealer, better in many opinions than Loctite 574. The application does appear a bit excessive, but pretty hard to pass judgement from behind my keyboard looking at a few pics.
I followed your thread about the build, and can only say I hope that the issues get resolved to everyone involved's satisfaction. Cheers
