Lapkritis - thank you for the idea. I see another order from our host in the near future. May as well get the CV joints cleaned up while I'm in there... Boots, grease, and such is pretty easy, but how about the boot ends: isn't there supposed to be a little hose clamp on there to keep it in place?
For the trans carrier, I could get it welded (I am sure) but I think that I've found an alternative to paying someone to weld it - and may buy one for a reasonable price to get a "salvaged one" - then I will replace the rubber on the carrier bracket. I will have to search the forums on repacking the CV joints. |
...more parts purchased...
Alright: I purchased some parts to take the next step in getting this car back on the road.
In addition to the trans mount bushings, I sprung for the engine mounts as well - both pair in poly. Since this car will be around in our family for the long term, I figured that I will replace some things that make sense to do so NOW rather than in a couple years. Since the CV joints are coming out, I sprung for the parts to do an overhaul of the CV joints - got the kit, less the actual CV joints. New boots, clamps, bolts, and so on. WHILE I'm in there, I figured I would replace the suspension bushings on the sway bar. I took a look at the sway bar bushings when I was under the car and they are trashed. Went poly/graphite there as well. I guess that it will be "Christmas in May" when I receive that package. |
It has been a little while since I posted an update to this thread - so - here goes.
I've gotten a few things done - and today I will be doing some installation of a some of the various odds N ends, now that I've completed the CV joint re-pack. By the way, that was the first time I repacked CV joints - usually if something is wrong with modern cars, I will replace the CV shaft assy and call it a day. That was a MESS. Anyhow: here's a picture of it as it is right NOW. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370105045.jpg At this point: the major items are bolt down the throttle plate, install injectors, route plug wires, and then we're going to take the motor off of the stand - to mate the trans/engine. With any luck I will be able to complete today. Question: Where does that breather hose go from on the car? I know it's on the back of the engine but where does the hose go? |
Made some progress today, I didn't bother getting into the wheel bearings, I figured I would focus my efforts toward finishing the engine and getting it closer to being ready to be taken off of the stand. When I wrapped up for the day but just prior to clean up -my (very patient) wife snapped a picture.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370131789.jpg So - I installed the injectors and sleeves, but noticed that the new sleeves stick out - which was not the case with the old injector sleeves. They feel like they're firmly installed (not really going anywhere) but - is this a problem? Aren't the sleeves supposed to be flush with the top of the injector port? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370131946.jpg |
Hi
" Aren't the sleeves supposed to be flush with the top of the injector port? " no, not with the new design |
Coors light eh? I have a hard time touching the stuff after my sophmore year. :)
Looks good - slap it in and triple check things as you connect them up and give it a crank. |
Big thank you iiXii and Lapkritis....
Coors light (tappin the rockies) will do for wettin the whistle when it's really humid out, and you just want a beer to toast the accomplishments of the day. I was sure that there would be a big thumbs down to that choise. I have special beers set aside for the days when we're going to get this bad boy started..... Paulaner and Hacker Pschorr weisse will be consumed. I have one more question about the throttle plate: I think that I am missing some items - and will post a picture soon. |
What is missing here?
Ok -
I am missing a couple parts here, on the throttle plate, but I am not sure what I am missing. I know -- the throttle return spring that attaches to the #1 intake runner, but there are a couple other things that I need to get from our host, and figure that I will take it all out in one shot. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1370298645.jpg Also: any thing that I should be looking out for on the side of the fire wall? |
CIS vacuum line: Q
Ok:
I have one last vacuum line to determine the routing. Here's a picture of where I am (back of the engine - toward the FRONT of the car)... The vacuum line in question is "small" and goes one of two places: from HERE to either: the distributor for timing advance/retard purposes OR the throttle linkage located on the fire wall - and is for cruise control purposes (maybe) These are the last two vacuum lines that I cannot quite determine the routing of. I DO NOT have an "air pump" - which I believe is the reason that the line to the right has a orange/red cap on it from dad. Suggestions? |
OK:
It makes sence that the vacuum line will go to the throttle linkage. I have circled the area in question for clarity. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372432646.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372432676.jpg Where are we going from here? |
engine installation
Alright y'all: a long day was able to be spent with the car today and I feel very good about the accomplishments.
Engine is in it's rightful place, and I am super happy about that: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372574127.jpg But; I still am not *sure* where that vacuum line goes, and I encountered a new 'problem' What is this? Where does this 'device' go? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372574252.jpg |
Excellent job - lookin' good !
Speedometer sensor - goes on transmission under clip in surface hole . . . Regards, |
|
The 'device' you are wondering about is the speedo sensor - it's clipped to the gearbox. Very close to the CV coupling.

Wire harness
Getting a little closer to start day.
I have the alternator with the internal voltage regulator; and the wire harness is "new" - equipped with the connector for the external VR. Seeing that I am not the first to have encountered this --- what have other members done to terminate the external voltage regulator wire harness connection? I am not comfortable just leaving is sit there; perhaps there is a way to hide this connector? |
To illustrate Sboxin and Greasemonkey's note on the "speedo puck."

I have been finding it hard to get time to work on this car, but I do have to report that I am in the middle of replacing the rear wheel bearings. This is QUITE a task, as pounding the bearing into the trailing arm is not an appropritae method to install these things. However, I was able to convince Dad to come up for a little while to help in the wheel bearing job: we have the driver complete, and the pass side is aiging in the freezer.
I wont see dad for a while (till late Septermber, maybe) so - the remainder of the job is going to be on my shoulders. On a happy note, he gave me the plate and insurance (stuff) and gave me instructions to break it in until he gets back. On the docket: Finish the (pass) rear wheel bearing (3 hours) put the rear sway bar back on (1 hour) confirm that all of the fuel lines are tight and ready to go - as well as confirm I have the ground connections (on the starter, trans and such) correct (1 hour) finish putting the hoses to the heater boxes on (1 hour) oil in engine (1 hour +/-) while installing the filter, new seal rings, and air filter figure out why/how the gas cap wont come off and put 5 gal fuel in (? hr) put the back bumper together, including cleaning all the oil leak crud from the passenger inside area (1 hour) THEN: (likely on a Sunday morning in the future) build oil pressure - using the procedure outlined in the 101 book - (2 hours) Break in drives (hours of enjoyment) staying close to home. It would appear that I have around 10-12 (or so) hours till life will be breathed back into this car. Anticipation is building. Because I was just sent a picture from my wife a couple weeks ago - I feel the need to share it. The exhaust looks sweet! I wish I would have gotten the muffler sandblasted in hind sight. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1375373853.jpg |
great job...keep making progress...almost there...

Update
I had the pleasure this weekend to put a bit more time into the car.
I was able to: finish the rear R wheel bearing (that job really tested my patience and ingenuity) - now both are done (sigh of relief!) Attach (install) the pass side CV shaft straighten the ground wire to the starter attach the pass side heater tube (the hose clamp to the heater box on the fire wall was quite a fight... WOW!). Get the gas cap off (shut up, that thing was on there super tight, and I didn't want to trash the thing just before I put gas in the tank...) On tap: put the rear bumper back together (will be done after the initial start, thank you...) put the rear sway bar back on (I had to move it out of the way to put the trans/engine in there) confirm all oil lines and fuel lines are tight (for a 3rd time) torque the CV joint bolts Attach the clutch linkage and shift linkage (forgot to add the shift linkage to the last list) oil/fuel addition build oil pressure as outlined in wayne's book. Start day is going to be rather sweet! |
more progress
Firstly, I would like to give thanks to a few people who have made this job a bit easier along the way:
Tony - the CIS expert (Boyt911SC I believe is his screen name) Yelcab1 Schumicat Kodioneill The reason that I am thanking you (along with others on this forum) is because you've contributed by answering a couple key questions that I have had through this project. Mainly - wiring related questions. That said, I was able to build the oil pressure (as outlined in the 101 book) last night: it appears that there IS life in this car! While I was abusing the starter and taking breaks to make sure that I didn't miss any oil lines: I am happy to report that it looks like I am still oil free. After my last round of holding the starter until the green oil pressure light goes off, and then hold for 15 seconds later: I decided it was time to reconnect the fuel pump relay and give this a shot - getting it to run on it's own. When I did, fire extinguisher ready: I was holding the starter trying to get a running engine so that I could hold 2k RPM for 20 minutes: I was told to STOP by my helper (wife) because there was fuel leaking. So, feeling a bit accomplished (the starter turned the engine - for the first time in nearly a decade!), I decided to hang up the project for the evening instead of trying to find which fuel line is 'leaking'. I think that I did not tighten one (now to find where). When I looked under the car, the fuel was all over the trans, dripping off of the trans carrier. That seems odd, I don't remember a fuel line there.... Is there a fuel line that I missed near the fire wall? We're going to jack the car up to take a look at every fuel line - AGAIN - before giving it another try. Any suggestions? |
