what engines will fit a 1966 porsche body
I have a 1966 Porsche with solex carbs. Everything needs to be overhauled. I modified the car to look like a Turbo in the early 80's.
I would like to put a larger engine in it but am not sure which ones will fit my 1966 901 transmission. If anyone out there can help I would appreciate it. ![]() |

The 901 will take only so much HP or torque.
If you go over the 225HP mark...I believe a change in trans would also be advised. Bob

a 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.7, 3.0, 3.2, 3.3, 3.6 will all fit, all transmissions will fit with modification as well, its really how far do you want to go?

First off,
Is it a 4 cyl or 6 cyl right now? With Solex carbs it could potentially be either. If a 4, you might consider either a VW type 1 or type 4. Both can be readily adapted in place of the 912. In particular the type 4 is easier since it has already has the beginnings of a "rear" motor mount, parts are dirt cheap, and they are pretty solid little motors. If it is a 6 with solex carbs, its an early 2 liter which are fabulous motors (though the carbs are an aquired taste). As said by another you could potentially put any air cooled 911 motor in there. But it would be most practical to limit yourself to 2,0 through 2,7 liter motors. Your existing flywheel/clutch can be transferred directly onto one of those motors and it will bolt right up with no modifications. All the other attachments (intake, exhaust, electrics, fuel, oil) will have relatively simple and non-permanent bolt on solutions. I must add that those are some very unusual wheels for a 911! |

Thanks for the feedback
I bought the car in 1979 for the engine. At the time I had a 1968 912 and was going to use the engine. Never swapped engines but sold the 912. That left me with a rusty 911. It was too rusty to restore so in 1982 I decided to make it into a Turbo Cabriolet look alike (Porsche did not make one at that time). SOOO... I bought the Turbo kit, I cut the top off, then decided to also modify it like a Targa. I removed the spare tire and moved the battery to where the spare was so I can fit the Targa type top into the front. I reinforced the body with 1X2 tubular steel bolted through the body pan from front to back torsion bars. This was the 80's so that's why I have the wire wheels (wanted something different). Makes for an attention getter. The car ran OK for many years. I had to stay out of the way of the newer Porsches because they thought I had more than the 130 hp...almost got ran over a couple time.
I always intended to do something with the engine but got busy and let the car set for about 10 years. Not so busy now any want to get it back on the road. I have be told that the Solex carbs and air cleaner are worth something to the European Rally folks. Would like to have the engine built to around 230 -250 hp with different carbs or sell the engine and put a newer one in it's place. Thanks for the information that you all gave. If anyone has any other recommendations or comments, it will be appreciated. Gary |

Another option is to go water pumper style with a WRX engine installed.
These things can put out lots of HP and they come with their own trans which is capable of holding the power. I believe Turbo versions are available as well. I checked and found several in the $5000 range that put out 300HP or more. Bob

how bad do you wanna be?
Old 66. If mine I would keep it 911 6. If you want 230 or 250 hp. you will need at a 2.7 or bigger. This means a 915. and this means a rocket ship with you low weight. for 230 plus in a 2.7 you want at least 9.5 cr (twin plug if higher cr) pmo 45 and some serious cams, 35 mm or bigger heads and intake manifold. ssi, exhaust etc etc. Or you could max out the 2.0 cams heads etc. and keep the 901. or split the difference and put 90mm cylinders and pistons on big heads and high cr pistons. I think you might like the 2.0 if you like revy motor cycle power. btw any idea whether you have a counterweighted crank and L cams? all usefull if you want a bargain 2.0 or 2.5 hot rod. best Henry

If the engine is original, sell it, or at least the carbs. Those are valuable to folks restoring early cars. The Early 911S Registry would be the place to sell them.
