Engine Sealing - Pics from the Porsche Museum

I was at the museum yesterday and snapped a ton of pics, especially of the 1970 LWB concept car as I am restoring a car from that era and want to replicate much of the factory's work.

I was shocked to see the amount of 574 squeezed out the underside of the motor. I didnt buy a new 911 in the 1960's or 1970's (I was still playing with GI Joe when the decade ended) so I dont know if thats how they all came straight from Zuffenhausen. This car was clearly restored to as-off-the-line state and being presented in the Porsche museum I have to assume every detail is endorsed by the company.

Oh, and by hte way, just about every car had a drip tray under the motor, so I guess we shouldnt give ourselves too hard a time, even the Factory cant keep 'em dry!

Why don't people just mill a small slot in the mating surfaces and use a piece of O-ring to seal it?
I have done this with many different engines in the past...makes assembly easy...stops all leakage...and if you have to take it apart again...almost no cleanup to the surfaces.
Let's try to get into the 21st century here guys.

It was definately 574. Still moist and smelled faintly of oranges. (dont tell Security I was poking at it.)

This was a recent factory reconstruction of a prototype, not an attempt to modernize.

Also note they look to be running Bursch-style headers.

Here's what 574 looked like after about a week; not much color to it. Also, this is what a Bursch header looks like. The three pipes on the factory car come in flat like Georges headers, the Bursch comes in in a triangle pattern. Maybe they use something a little different at the factory for sealing that we need to know about...

The factory quite often displays cars that don't belong to them. This means that they don't have any say as to how it is built.
The late pressure fed tensioners show you that they were not shooting for a concurs restoration.

I would say that the headers are actually heater boxes with the tin removed.

Leaking factory gluing failures (4% on new 964 engine in 1991) are why we worked so hard to come up with the "Five glue technique " that we use at Supertec. Even with five glues they leak on occasion.

I asked the Attendant, it was rebuilt downstairs in the shop that you can see into from the Cafe.

The card presented in front of the car described this as a "915 Prototype" extended wheelbase car that was developed over a 4-year period but never went into production. That might explain the mix of bits. I'll post some other pics to give you an overall sense of it...I took 175 pics of this car.

I never knew 917 motors has some kind of sheathing around the head studs. But then again I've never seen the inside of a 917 motor before...

I've only ever notices spring arms plated...did the factory paint some?

I also noticed the huge variety in fasteners and latches on the cars...sometimes philips-head screws, some allen-head stainless bolts...some latches were rubber, others in the same era were aluminum, some lenses were glass, others plastic...very interesting (to me.)

Never seen factory painted spring plates. In the pic above, note that the spring plate is a weld-up job from two spring plates. A prototype part used to extend the wheelbase of the car. The cad plating would have been compromised when the parts were cut and welded, so they painted them instead.

All bets are off with originality on prototypes.
