Who says red threadlocker 271 is no longer available? I still see it available thru retail sources.

Or are you referring to 574? US version is 518.

Loctite 271 threadlocker or equivalent is available from many sources - but not known as such by other manufacturers. Color coding usually remains the same; green, blue, red.

Hi Sherwood
Thanks for replay. I can not find 574 in Taiwan, so I am going to use 573(slow curing one). How is the 518? does any one recommend this?

Any of the Loctites mentioned should be OK, be it 263 or 271. They're both high strength and permanent (need heat to loosen) threadlocker good to 300 F. The different types are for different size fasteners. 263 is good up to 3/4 in. size and 271 is up to 1 in.

For the threadlocker to work best, you want to use a primer on it. Your fastener is probably zinc plated and Loctite says use Primer 7649 on black oxide, zinc or cadmium to be most effective.

518 is similar to 574 (and 573) but hardens in 4 hours instead of 1 (574). It's also red, where 574 is actually orange. Honestly the various types of Loctite products can make your head spin, trying to figure out which one is the best to use.

I use mcmaster.com as a quick resource for researching them. You can type in loctite in the search field and then just go thru the list of product numbers to pick out the one you want information about. Their catalog is a VERY good reference tool!!!
