3.2 Carrera manifold on an SC

NOTE: I'VE FINISHED MY CONVERSION AND UPDATED THE FIRST POST TO COMPLETE THE LIST OF PARTS NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE CONVERSION. THE MESSAGES THAT FOLLOW ARE COMMENTS TO MY ORIGINAL FIRST POST.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Generally speaking, it is a simple bolt-on conversion as long as you have the right parts.
NOTE THAT I AM ALREADY USING AN AFTERMARKET EFI SYSTEM (BITZ RACING)

PARTS AND MODIFICATIONS LIST:

*INTAKE STUDS: 51mm (overall length) I managed to snap one off while removing the old ones. Luckily, I have the tool to drill out the old stud from an earlier exhaust stud removal adventure last year. So be sure to let the studs soak in a little PB blaster no matter how "easy" the first 11 come out.

*SPACERS [The spacers will compensate for the different sized ports on both the manifold and head]: (Sourced from Clewett Engineering. Let Richard know what your doing and he'll set you up. Clewett Engineering, The complete solution for ignition & fuel injection)

*GASKETS: Use SC gaskets on the bottom of the spacer and Carrera gaskets on top.

*REMOVAL OF ENGINE SHROUD: Need to increase the opening around the intake port to fit the spacer/manifold.

*THE THROTTLE LINKAGE: Bent the stock SC throttle arm at the same angle as the Carrera arm (Carrera arm was too short) and attached to the stock throttle body location. Worked great for me.

*I'm using the BITZ EFI system and will need to lower the support bracket securing the fuel rail and increase the length of nearly all the fuel hoses.

*I'll be reusing the AAR from my 3.0l intake and adapting it to the 3.2 intake.

*The throttle bodies are similar so all the existing hoses should swap over easily.

DONE.

You dont need the spacers. The Carrera heads are shorter on the intake and use the spacers to make up the difference.
Spacer numbers are 930.110.459.00 if you were using Carrera heads

Thanks for the reply.

So I wouldn't even need the longer intake studs then?

You will have to do a little blending of the ports depending on what year heads you have. The early SC were 39mm and the later were 34mm and the Carrera intake is 40mm

RE the spacers. I thought these are "phenolic" spacers that are heat isolators to reduce heat transfer from the heads to the intake manifold?

You still need the spacers exacty for the above mentioned reasons, the SC manifold don't need them, it gets isolated by the rubber boots at the intake box.,cheers.

Another question:

I do have the larger (39mm) intake ports. Is there any alignment issues with the manifold not lining up with the intake on the SC? Other then the 1mm difference.

Is it required to machine the heads for proper fit for the injectors to clear? Sounds like I might need to remove the engine to do this project.

Thanks for the replies.

You ll find you need the carburated spacers for the likes of a 78/79 because the Carrera intake port is so large the SC runners cant cover the notch for the motronic injector.

Thanks for the pic Craig.

While I'm at it, I guess I'll throw out the throttle linkage "mod" question too. What have others done/used?

I just got my 3.2 manifold today and did a rough measurement of the throttle linkage placement. It looks close from just eyeballing it but I heard a mod is still necessary.

I still have the 3.0l manifold installed at the moment.

Here is mine 1982 SC with complete 3.2 system

The ports on the 3.0 were smaller and needed to be opened up a bit to be flush.

Excellent! Looks great Nippy!

What other issues did you run across?

Throttle linkage?

What size intake stud will I need? I searched for "intake stud" and see our host lists a few lengths:

M8x22mm (listed as SC intake)
M8x35mm (listed as an exhaust)
M8x50mm (listed as an exhaust)
M8x51mm (listed as an exhaust)

But doesn't seem to list one under Carrera (1984-89)??

The Carrera 3.2 intake uses a M8 x 35 stud on the intake side of the head

999.062.010.02

Also the cylindrical-shaped female inhex nuts are recommended to use because the area around the intake runners is tight for regular hex nuts 901.111.271.00 x 12 nuts. These also use a fat spacer washer (~ 2.5 mm thick) under them so the hex doesn't get too shallow on the threads 999.025.152.02

The inhex nuts and fat washers aren't an absolute must, but I will say they make tightening the intake a lot easier. Plus the intake is known to get a little loose sometimes, so its nice to have cleanly installed fasteners with minimal interference. That said, I cooked up some shaved conical spring washers to use under the nuts to help maintain tightness. I can't say if it really made a difference. Just pointing out that I was able to use something other than the factory fat washers with the inhex nuts.

phenolic spacer

Bruce is right, the last 930 I installed a carrera manifold on the carrera spacer barely covered the cutout, I did not know there was a carbed version available. Ken

3.2 Carrera manifold fitted to a large port SC

In regards to a 3.2 Carrera manifold fitted to a large port (39mm) SC:

"Hi Kyle,

Yes we have the insulators. A set of 6 is $38.22. A set of 12 gaskets is
$29.64.

We look forward to an opportunity to help with your project."

Clewett Engineering, The complete solution for ignition & fuel injection

I know we're not supposed to post commercial ads but if our host doesn't carry it then Richard Clewett can help. Apologies for the plug moderators, delete this if inappropriate.
