One side running
I did a top end rebuild, reground cams to 964 spec., rebuilt heads, all new valves, etc.. Cams set at 1.5 +/- .1. Reinstalled engine, only the left bank is running. I'm getting spark and gas to the right bank but no combustion.
Thing runs on only 3 cylinders. 1988 3.2 lt. Carrera Cams out of time????? Just one cam out of time??? What else could it be? |
You have compression on the non running side?
|
I did not check. Going to drop the engine this afternoon and do a leak down.
|
you dont have to do a leak dwn........you are looking for why its not running.
If you have compression on non running side..we can start to look else where..... Leak dwn is good for some things.......you need a General idea here a leak dwn is good for a engine all broke in..your numbers will be a bet off no matter what at this point |
Shure you did not reverse the right camshaft for 180°?
|
Swing your dist. 180 and you light off the other side. Your cold side cam is 180 out.
Bruce... been there and done that |

here is a rare cause:
the right cam sprocket is not engaged with the cam - either cuz a pin was left out or sheared - loose bolt/nut, or it just stripped cuz the cam seized for some reason absolute worst case - "somebody" tightened the cam nut/bolt with an impact wrench - it can crack the cast iron & the nose can simply break off after engine starts running - yes - i did that once about 25 yrs ago on the first engine i ever worked on YIKES the seized cam - stripped sprocket event happened to me once when oil line got ripped off when wifey ran over a concrete divider one dark nite in Pocatello - engine ran a couple miles before it ran out of oil on one cam and it seized - she said it had no power those last few miles - the red light did not deter her from driving onward . |
