964 Engine need Rebuilt

Good afternoon Pelicanites,.. I don’t think I ever posted in this section before, or ever though would need to,..!

I have a 1992 C2 which consume approximately 1.7-1.8 quarts to 1000 miles. The fact that I don’t have a cat (Fabspeed cat by-pass) doesn’t help because the nauseating smell of half-burn smell from the exhaust is now giving me wicked head hakes when I'm driving. Anyhow,... I think I need a rebuild.
I am looking for advice but trying to keep it on a budget. Here are my thoughts.

I would like to dive into my 964 engine and perform a rebuild. Not looking for heavy track mods, but rather a pleasant and peppy driver. I want to keep the OEM configuration, although I was looking at the JE ceramic coated pistons with a higher compression ratio (11.5:1 rather than the OEM 11:1). Also if sportier cams would be beneficial without compromising street drivability I would consider it as well. I already have a RS lightweight flywheel (new last year < 2,200 miles), so what I am looking for is to increase mainly torque rather than hp, if that makes sense,….More hp is also ok with me but not as important as tq. I have no problem doing the rebuilt with OEM parts if the JE pistons are no so compatible with the Mahle cylinders. Has anyone combined both? I've research the LN engineering site and they states that if cylinders are purchase they have to be matched with the JE piston, however there is no mention of JE piston can’t be installed into Mahle cyl,.. Please provide input. Also i would need suggestion on cams, I do 10-12 autocross a year, other than that approximately 1200 to 1500 miles of street a year. Still like to take the lady out on dates from time to time.

Any info or suggestion on built spec would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Well . . . .

We just rebuilt a 964 --- and --- it turned out to be an expensive project.
Why?
Please take a look at our rebuild thread --
1992 964 Engine rebuild - reasonable approach?

Summary:
-- cylinders out of spec = reconditioned Mahle to 3.8L and JE 12.5cr pistons
-- heads reconditioned w/ new valves and EBS race quality valve springs
--#5 rod bearing severe wear =bottom end rebuilt w/balanced reconditioned rods ARP bolts
-- WebCams 20-21 high torque cams - reconditioned rockers - new shafts

Results: 270 RWHP 255 lb-ft RWT

This was a used engine with poor leak down numbers.

Advice
-- you might get a leak down test before starting any work.
-- call Webcams and EBS ( Porsche Racing Parts : Engine Performance Parts : Brake Parts : Used Porsche 356 : 911 : 912 : 914 : 944 : Porsche Boxster Parts : EBS Racing Inc.

Regards,

Call Henry at Supertec. If he has time, he'll walk you through your project. I have always found him to be willing to share his knowledge with Porsche enthusiasts.
Good luck with your project.

supertecpeformance.com 760-728-3062 I think they're closed on Mondays.
