Timing for 964 cams in 3.0

Ready to set timing. The guy who did the 964 grind said to set timing to 1.7-1.8 degrees. Sound right? Better options?

The book calls for 1.25 with 1.4 being high side for C2
If you dont have the domed pistons of CIS I have a set engine @ 2.0mm with C2 cams
Set them at grinders spec and check the clearance to the piston by turning in the rocker adjustment to see how far you are from the piston. The thread pitch is 1mm.

Oops, that's mm, not degrees....

Thanks, Bruce. They are the original pistons, with the kind of half dome. My search results revealed recommendations from 1.24 to 1.8. As I understand it, as the cam timing advances the low end torque increases (to a point), compensating for the "loss" of low end you'd get with the 964 cam and the standard setting. If I'm wrong, by all means set me straight.

Yes, as you move the timing forward the torque is made in the lower end of RPMs. If you research, the euro is timed for top end power and the american is timed for low torque.
