? Parts That Should Be Reassembled In Original Positions
Trying to figure out which parts I should label/mark to ensure they are reassembled in the original location/position.
For example: I'm sending the heads to a machine shop for Inspect/R&R - is it important to mark the heads #1-6 so can I reassemble and mate to the corresponding #1-6 cylinders that they were attached to when dissassembled. I understand the point of reassembling parts that have friction points (ex. pistons in original cylinders, bearings remaining with same lobes etc.). I don't see where it matters when you are having parts machined though. Another example: rockers - I'm having the cams & rockers reground, Wayne's book recommends replacing the rockers back in original positions (for camshaft housing fitment). What needs to go back in original positions when reassembling - I'm thinking just friction worn mated parts that are not being machined or replaced, am I wrong? Thanks Gordo

If it's machined it shouldn't matter, on the heads if you don't get them flycut then it does matter. I still return the pistons, jugs and heads to the same spot, I use a cheap $10 engraver to mark them. If it hasn't been machined it goes back the same place as it came out.

Scribing
Thanks Mark,
I have a cheap engraver as well - scribed the heads and other parts for installation back in their original location. Don't necessarily see how it matters for quite a few parts since many are new or machined, but I guess once I started scribing, I couldn't stop. Gordo

On my 1980, all the heads are numbered by the factory, 1 - 6.
