Twin Plug, bottom plug question

Other than using the ARP head nuts, is there any way/tool available to install the bottom plugs on a twin plug head? The stock lower head nut protrudes just enough to block the plug socket! These heads were already drilled and tapped for 14mm plugs (top and bottom) when I bought them. I am using the NGK BPR6ES plugs, at least for the initial startup.

Thanks,

Typing error

That should be Raceware head nuts, not ARP. My bad!

Just went through this, you can use standard VW air cooled engine head nuts on these head studs, the plug removal tool or a plug socket then fits. I am using the same plugs you are.

I have to credit Steve at Rennsport Systems for this, he is the one who answered the same question for me.

I just finished fixing the problem another way. The interference between the head nut and the plug socket is very small. I removed each of the head nuts that were in the way and ground a small 45 degree bevel (approx. 3mm x 3mm) on the top end of the nut. I did not take off enough metal to compromise the integrity of the head nut, just enough to allow the plug socket to slide by. I did each, one at a time and retorqued the nut before moving on to the next one. The standard plug socket now just barely slides by the offending head nut, but it works!

We use NGK BKR 6 EKUB or BOSCH FGR 6 KQE.
These plugs have 14mm thread but use a 5/8' or 16mm socket.

Of course with Supertec head stud plug clearance is never an issue.

Henry,

I know that the Supertec head studs and associated hardware is tops. And thanks for the tip on the other spark plugs. But, cut me some slack here, I at least bought and am using a set of the Supertec engine air diverter tins!

Hey Fred, you can have all the "slack" you need. The statement was designed to inform those who don't have your knowledge.

I just noticed a missing nut, no "slack" here. SmileWavy

Cheers

Thanks for the heads up. I found that missing nut right after this picture was taken! Actually, I appreciate all of the input that is available from this board! What an incredible wealth of knowledge!
