Over size bearing question
Have a pulled head stud and while in there want to address anything else that makes sense.
The bearings are marked 00.25 which I assume mean they are one over and the crank has been turned in the past. The bearings and crank show almost no wear. One bearing has slight scuffing on it but nothing close to being able to catch a nail on. So what's my best option. reuse the current bearings? find a used standard, standard crank? try to find new .25 bearings? Many Thanks Chris 73 911 E, 2.4 L, 7 R case, about 75k miles since last bottom end rebuild. PS, just think this view of the engine is too cool ![]() |

There are lots of good options.
Given your description of the bearings, it might make sense to send the bearings to Calico Coatings and have them (the bearings) dry film coated. Calico Coatings 5883 Balsom Ridge Road Denver NC 28037 David 704-483-2202 Fax: 704-483-2145 jjenkins@calicocoatings.com Undersized bearings are still available from the dealer (special order) and they are not that expensive. Before you make any decisions, you need the check the line bore. You may end up needing different bearing if you line bore the case. Std/Std crank is no better than a .010/.010 if ground and heat treated properly. They are just easier to get bearing for. Remember that Timeserts are not an appropriate way to repair the mag case. You really need a professional to install CaseSavers. BTW: that view of the engine makes me dizzy..... ![]()

Henry, Would you recommend I send the case with bearings to Supertec and you tell me whats best. For sure it will need the case savers. 99% it will need an align bore back to what it is now. Want the squirters tested and cleaned.
Did a quick search on e-bay for the .25 bearings and they run $250 - $1000 which seems crazy in that they are soooo simple. Chris |
