Number 8 bearing

Why is the the groove for the outter gasket so big compared to the gasket it self?

Just doing a sanity check that I have the correct gasket.

Thanks,

Chris

Yes that groove does seem big, but the o-ring does stick out above the groove. I has to have space to "squish" into. One tech tip is to use a bigger o-ring. I tried that and the ring pinched into the case seam. I now only use the correct o-ring. Also be careful about using silicon grease on the o-ring. I keep it away from the part of the ring near the case seam. If you get silicon grease in the case seam it will keep the case sealant away from the seam and cause a leak. (first hand knowledge!).

The groove is larger than the o-ring by design.
When properly installed, the o-ring presses up against the leading edge of the groove leaving a space. This space connects to a slot in the bearing that allow pressurized oil that reaches the o-ring to be returned to the inside of the case.
By relieving this pressure, the o-ring has less stress in it's attempt to seal the bearing and case.

When installing the o-ring it's important to make sure the o-ring is not twisted and that it is positioned in the groove towards the pulley seal.

Thanks Henry, I did not know about the positioning of the O ring. Will make it so.
