1970 T MSD ignition kits
Hi
I am new to this forum and also have newly acquired a all numbers matching 1970 911 T. We're getting a tonne of work done to the body in the states (using DJ's autobody in Morristown NJ) as is a little rusty in places !!! Then we'll be shipping back to the E.U to finish the engine work and interior. I need a couple of questions answered from you guys as there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer out there... OK 1 thing I really want to install is the MSD ignition upgrade. Is there a kit out there for the 2.2 ltr motor ? ?? ? Can anyone point me in the right direction to where I can buy such a kit ? If there isn't can any of you guys list the part numbers I'll be needing ? I know I will be buying the ignition control, coil and tacho adaptor but I don't have the experience to know which work best with my motor. Thanks in advance (I'm sure I'll need more help in the future ![]() Eddie |

Eddie,
Relatively easy to do. I run an MSD 6A and Blaster 2 coil (some recommend the high vibration resistant coil) through my original Marelli distributor, and it works great. Instead of the tach adapter I had my tach internally adapted by North Hollywood Speedometer. Probably someone similar in your area can do this. The wiring's pretty straightforward, between diagrams that come with the unit and assorted posts in the tech section here. Mike

Hey Mike
Thanks for the info. I thought its a pretty straightforward operation and that the 6A is the right box to go with. Where did you buy yours from ? Eddie |

Eddie,
Our host is the preferred provider of all things Porsche, of course (Porsche 911 Ignition - Page 7) But these are widely available from other sources. I think I bought mine directly from the manufacturer. Do note that there's also a rev-limiting box available, and that you'll want upgraded plug wires with either. Mike

One big issue we encountered when we first started using multiple spark discharge CD boxes was the propensity for the resister to burn out of the rotor. The cure is to wire the box to produce a single spark discharge ( MSD website explains how) or find a solid rotor. We also removed the resister from some rotors to maintain a multi spark feature.

Hi Henry
Thanks for your imput, greatly appreciated ! naturally if I want to avoid this kind of problem! Is there a solid rotor out there designed to be use with the 911 distributor ? Also how difficult is it to locate and remove the resistor from the original rotor? I'd preferably like to keep the multiple spark feature. Another question I have is which Tach adaptor will be correct to use with a "70 2.2T I'm thinking its the current limited Tach adaptor but clarity would be great Thanks again Eddie |

There is a post here on how to mod the rotor. You grind trough the epoxy and resistor (fiberglass) that's between the center and end brass pieces with a dremel. You solder a wire or brass strip between the two pieces. Then fill the trough back up with epoxy.

Hey guys
I was searching for the article on modifying the rotor but couldn't locate it. Any chance of someone posting the link up ???? I own a 1970 T which (not being able to see the car as is in Dj's in Morristown) I'm thinking has the Marelli distributor. Is there anyone who supplies solid rotors out there ? I am going to use the new 6AL control box, will that protect the rotor from burning out ? Its confusing reading some posts/articles which are related to racing applications. Can anyone tell me if I'm likely to get trouble from my rotor if the car is only going to be setup for road use ? I haven't installed MSD before and whilst I don't want to cook my ignition components, I also have a budget to keep in mind Thanks Eddie |
