My 3.2SS Part II - some parts

I finally have all the pieces to build my engine. I tore it down a month ago for a single broken head stud. Two more broke during disassembly. I will be posting a few pictures this week as parts are ready for the build.

First up, ignition parts.
The engine will be twin-plugged. I bought the twin-plug rotor from Aaron Burnham (Burn-Bros.). He supplied an excellent product including the dist. shaft to rotor adapter.

This project goes back a few years. Once Aaron posted the first descriptions of the rotor I bought the Jag 12-plug cap. Then I took some measurements and drew up a preliminary CAD file to mount the cap on my SC distributor. Many thanks to my good friend Ben for correcting my CAD file and turning the adapter plate out on the mill. This is not as fancy as Aaron's designs using the top bearing support. I don't put that many miles on this car so I might have to replace the top dist bushing. Those are much easier to make. Enjoy.






Next, Watch for signs of internal engine coatings.

A few more from the weekend... Enjoy.

MMM Fresh heads. These are twin plugged and chamfered for the 98mm PC set. 12mm second plug holes. I ceramic thermal barrier coated the combustion chamber and the exhaust port. I also Dry film lube (DFL) coated the valve stems. They are super smooth. I also DFL coated the performance valve springs. The idea behind these coatings is to reduce internal friction and provide more efficient combustion while reducing overall engine temperatures. In TX, I need a cool running engine.





On to the PC set. I also ceramic coated the piston crowns and DFL coated the skirts. Nothing like slippery pistons. I can really tell a difference when you drop a piston through the cylinder sans rings. Even with a drop of oil on the uncoated skirts you can feel the "stiction". The coated pistons drop through with nary any drag. Imagine the friction generated heat at 7K rpm... yeah, just ponder that for a minute. Every bit of friction and parasitic energy loss is costing you torque (HP).





Here are the pistons installed on one bank. I am starting the "dry" build to check valve clearance. This will all come apart for sealants and assembly lube later this week after some much needed measurements.

Jamie, nice work. What compression are you running? I am presently pulling my MS EFI 3.0 for complete rebuild. Going to Twin plug a set of 79 heads and run a 964 distributor. Do you know if i can match 10.5:1 JE's with set of stock but matched/ plated 3.2 cylinders? Why did you decide to go with what you choose? Thanks

My compression measures 9.9:1 with these pistons. I chose them because they have been sitting on the shelf for the past few years. It was a matter of budget and parts availability. I had some delays to get rings for these pistons and was about to get some JEs.

If you get JEs I would suggest going through a reputable builder that can do your cylinder work and match the pistons to the jugs. Supertec, EBS, JB Racing and LN Engineering are the first that come to mind when dealing with JE pistons.

How is Wilmington these days? I am a UNCW alum from the early 90s.

Hey Jamie

Can you tell me how your engine is holding up after doing all the coatings?
I am thinking of doing the same thing on my build. Have you had any issues with
the coatings flaking off the top of the pistons? I was planning on using the Techline Coatings. TLML DRY FILM LUBRICANT for bearings and piston skirts, and CBC2 POWERKOTE (Cermet Coating Thermal barrier) for the piston tops.

Any insight would be appreciated.
