are there any inexspensive valve spring compressor tools out there maybe somebody know some other way to get the valve out

Sears has a good selection of them with good warranty. The big C clamp ones with a lever and fine adjustment don't touch the springs and are usually stocked in the store. I have this one and it works well for $35. You get what you pay for.

This may look crude but what I made out of an old 6" C-clamp has worked better than some fancy ones I have tried, it's small and easy to handle made just for 911 heads and have done hundreds of them with this.

We use one that looks like this, works like a charm. My guess is that this is available pretty cheap in the US at a place like Harbor freight.

I like Craig's approach.

Here is one I bought - from Sears I think, as they were recommended. It wasn't up to the task, at least with race springs. I'd start squeezing, and something would bend. I'd weld on some reinforcing plates, and try again. Something else would bend. I mount it in a vice, and have gotten so that I can get things on first try most of the time.

The handle was way too short for the force needed, so that got lengthened as well as reinforced (it was flexing).

Not sure Harbor Freight quality ones would do any better. Sure would be nice, though.

Yah that universal spring compressor is a pile of crap. The forked "foot" that sits on the spring retainer wants to walk off when you really have to apply a lot of compression to the spring. Been there done that. Thing is freakin' dangerous on stiff springs.

The one that Jeff posted is much better because it captures the entire spring/retainer. The one that Craig made is the hot setup & very sturdy. My buddy Brian made a similar one he showed me.

When you switch to titanium valve spring retainers, you end up with a lot of steel ones just crying to be put to use in something like this.

I made a c-clamp style one today, very similar to craigs (cgarr). Is there any risk of bending valves with this type of tool? I worry that if I don't have the clamp EXACTLY centered that I will be compressing the spring at an angle to the valve stem and possibly bend it.. or am I too worried.

They will not bend, might have some tight keepers at times. Over 600 heads and 2400 valves later and never a problem.

KTC Auto tools HO-7002 is one I bought on ebay. Just loaned it out for an Audi head or I'd take a picture.
Sold as a heavy duty unit for motorcycle heads. Worked on my Toyota head too.

If the keepers are tight, try pinging the top of the valve stem with a hammer before compressing. Weird, but works.
