Re-awakening a long dormant 2.2T

I have an engine from a 70T, the engine was literally shut off and parked back in '99 or so. It did not have anything done to it other than being turned by hand a few times over the years. It supposedly has about 60,000 miles on it. Turning it by hand only it still seems to have good compression, oil was still in the sump but was not changed when parked, Zenith carbs have been cleaned and renewed, checked valve timing and just cleaned up the motor. Having sat so long is it advisable to try and start it or should it be taken apart to check out bearing surfaces, rings, cylinders etc??? Opinions or things to definitely check please.

I would try first to go forward without a rebuild. If it is not OK you need to open it up anyhow but maybe you are lucky. I would do the following to minimize making things worse:

Take out the old oil.
Take the valve covers of and check if the cams, rockers, and valves look good (no rust) and move freely. Adjust the valve clearance. If you have a small camera you can check the insides of the cylinders through the spark plug hole or through the inlets or outlets.
Take the bottom plate of to check the engine from the inside for rust and loose objects.
Close the engine with new seals and put in the cheapest oil you can find. Then use the starter to turn the engine a couple of times. Check if oil pressure gauge in reacting to this and remove the top valve covers to check if oil comes out of the little cam spray holes.
Drain all the oil. Put in another batch of cheap 10W40 oil and after creating some oil pressure by turning it with the starter (without ignition) you can normally try to start the engine. Hopefully it runs and you can rev it for a while. Then I would again change the oil to your normal preferred engine oil and start driving it. I wouldn't wait until the next normal oil change, but if it runs well you should be fine for a couple of thousand miles and after that you adjust the valve clearance again change the oil and follow the normal maintenance pattern.

Agree whith HEINZ911 that the way to do it.Do some video when you do it if you want to sell it.
