993 Catalytic Converters
I would like to replace the catalytic converter on my 1998 993 N/A engine. At first I fitted a 200 cell sport cat, but have found that the increased noise is unacceptable. The original cat really needs to be replaced, since I suspect that at its age and mileage, it has to be partially plugged. My engine is newly rebuilt. I would like to fit a cat that is in as good a condition as my engine.
Unfortunately, an OEM replacement cat is listed at over $5k putting it out of the equation. What options do I have to restore cat performance without an increase in noise?

I think someone posted in rennlist that FD motorsports was able to have a different density cat put in one of the FD sport cats. I believe they said they had a 300 cell. Stock is 400?

Thanks for the reply. I did not know that FD Motorsports carried cats. Perhaps you were thinking about Fabspeed cats?

Nope, FD Motorsports makes a sport cat setup. I had it on my 993, sounded amazing but a bit too loud. Somebody posted they had a set as well but had 300 cell cartridges installed vs the standard 200 cell from FD.

Thanks for the offer, but at 136k miles, your cat has 25k more miles on it than the unit I am looking to replace. I have, though, found a cat that came off an engine at 65k miles. I will install it shortly. Oddly enough, in my search for a cat, I contacted Sunset Porsche for pricing and availability of new cats from Porsche. FYI, a new cat is a little over $3000 from Sunset. But, interestedly enough, when I asked, they told me that in the last four years they have sold a total of (2) new cats! And, they do not stock them. They come directly out of Germany and are on backorder, so it would take several weeks to several months to get one. Given the number of 993's in this country, it appears that just a handful of cars have been fitted with new cats.
