Twin-Plug Splitter Options

I am planning a rebuild of my nearly stock '86 3.2 Carrera motor to either a hi-compression 3.2 or 3.4 w/ 993SS cams and stock exhaust system, either of which would incorporate a twin-plug setup.

I have seen several threads where folks have offered an Andial "splitter" which, as I understand in my rudimentary non-technical mind, splits the ignition signals from the Bosch Motronic brain to the motor. Seen lots of threads where the splitter mated w/ the standard brain, a 964 distributor, and cams have produced very smooth performing, reliable motors with more power.

My question is, everything else being equal, are there other options to the Andial splitter? If so, what are they? (BTW, if anyone has an Andial splitter to sell, happy to make this whole issue mute!)

I understand Andial is no more and, as a result, these units are in relatively high demand and go very quickly on this and other boards when offered.

At $500+/- each however, they actually seem "affordable" to me (euphemism in Porsche-speak) when compared to dumping more of my car's native ignition system and buying a Motec or other electronic ignition system for much, much more.

This is primarily a street car, so all-out performance and tuning are not high on my list. Heat in colder days and continued compliance w/ DC's emission laws (OEM Catalyst system must stay) and reliability and efficiency of Motronic are primary for me.

Thanks in advance for input here.

John

I have the andial splitter and had to replace some components so bought all the parts in bulk except the ignition modules. Looks like an easy thing to make. Just need to make the printed board which I think is pretty easy.

Haltech and others make splitters and ignitors also. A 12 point distributor or a 993-style doubled up dizzy are also options.

Im going the dual plug 12 point dizzy in my rsr engine build. I see alot of guys go the 993/964 dual plug dizzy but it ruins it for me when you have a vintage engine build with new parts. Oh well ... Big old distributor for me, lol. BTW I have a 993 dual plug distributor for sale just north of you in Baltimore if you decide to get a splitter and go that route. GL.

Thanks guys for the input.

My goal is to create an '86 Carrera RS that is largely stock and not back-dated RS-clone (my original plan), but a high-performance, normally aspirated 911 that Porsche might have sold.

As such, I am not too concerned about originality or what parts were produced when, because it's all made up anyway. And, the only one I'm trying to please is me.

Ultimately what happens under the hood will be a function largely of the $ I can cobble together--old story, I know.

I rebuilt a true MFI 2.4E into a 2.7RS w/ 9.8:1 JE pistons and that car ran like a bat out of hell, and I'm nostalgic for the raw excitement that that motor created.

I have to admit the allure of the "big" 12-plug distributor is a Siren's song back to the glory days of GT racing, but how difficult to find one and then how much more expensive than a 993/964 take-off would it be?

Thanks,
John

JB racing dual plug is $1500ish. Its a very nice modern example. Supertec is $2300 plus you provide the SC distributor. Everyone is very pleased with the look and function. Orig RSR ... well if you have to ask its to much. All of that is just for the distributor. Doesnt include the MSD or other spark controllers x 2. Its a slippery slope my friend, lol.
