2.0 engine case

I'm finding more and more information about my engine rebuild. Looking at the case there are no numbers stamped into it. The machine shop says that it is a replacement case, and that they were left blank so that the installing shop could stamp the original numbers back. I guess it wasn't done when the case was replaced in the 70's. Is this correct? And where can I have this done if that's the case? As far as getting the original number, I guess a certificate of authenticity is the best bet to find it?

I think it will be more valuable (and less of a headache) to leave it unmarked. If you stamp it with the matching numbers then there you need to disclose that it is a replacement case, some might think you are trying to defraud (even though that was what was done back in the day).

Unstamped cases are rare and make the car worth more than a non-matching numbers engine but less than a car with the original case.

Thanks for the response. I'm not looking to get rid of the car but want to maintain the value as much as possible. I think I'll leave it unstamped
