1972 s 2.4 motor

Looking for some advise , I have a 1972 s 2.4 mfi. Motor with transmission and other accessories . Found out that these motors are rare and worth some money. Should I sell as is which is running rough with some oil leaks and needs some tunning for mfi or invest some money and have it rebuilt and sell.

It's real value is to the owner of the original chassis.
Post serial numbers of the engine and trans here and on the early 911s registry, and maybe someone will recognize the numbers
Good luck

Engine number is 6321204. Mfi. #0408 126 013. And trans. #7321101

Is it better to leave as is or rebuild

You won't rebuild it to the degree the buyer would want so sell it as is
You have to set a price here, research, see what it counterparts are selling for.
Set a price, remember, you can't negotiate up...

Personally I would rather buy it as is and rebuild it the way I want. I don't think you could recover a good quality rebuild costs then if something happens to it? Sell it as is.

Thanks for the advise I'm just having a hard time setting a price on something that I'm not sure the value or how rare if any are these motors. This motor is off my first porsche about twenty years ago and everyone always wanted to upgrade the motor and update the body now everything is going the other way everyone wants to backdate and original. Nobody was even interested in these motors and now you can't find them. Why is the 72 911s so valuable I see them going for over 100k and the motor and trans. Is an important part to the puzzle. Any thoughts

In a nutshell that I'm positive others will expand upon , the 72's and 73's were the last of the non impact bumper , non pollution equiptment strangled early 911's. The 72's and '73s were the most powerful and comfortable of the 1965-1973 cars. They are light and fast and old and they aren't making any more. The S model of course was the fastest offered in those years. Most would agree that the pre 1974 cars are the best looking with their lack of big bumpers and big bumper pads. They are yummy cars!

A 73S was one of the best Porsche rides I ever got; the motor made my heart sing.

Research carefully, and go to the EarlyS registry for better details. You have a gem.

Also, FWIW if you could keep it for another several years the value will continue to climb.

Tough call.

Rebuilding is costly and you would want a documented name builder $$$. might not end up with any more money than selling as is.

Selling as is; mentioned above would probably get most money from the original car owner. It's a long shot probably worth pursuing.

Serious buyers would probably want to check the condition of the engine before buying for fair money. IE leak down numbers, pulling valve covers looking for pulled studs etc...there could be value in providing these numbers and overall condition if found to be in good condition.

There is value in the parts so don't let someone low ball you. You can check the value of the MFI system, heads, con rods in the classified section, which are all valuable.

Good luck.

Sell it "as is". Anyone who might want to put it their car will want it built to their specializations. With the value of long hood cars, you never know what the restoration project might look like. $200k all original or a RS replica? A daily driver or a track car.

The engine has nice pieces so it should have good value to the "right" end user.
The other option, of course, is to seek out a chassis and install it in a project for yourself. A 74 RS Tribute with a 2.4/2.7 MFI engine is a great car to own and will see good value increases in the future.
