OK to drill 3.0 case for SSI mounts?
Installing new SSI's on my rebuilt 1983 SC 3.0 engine and there are no threaded holes to mount the support tabs on the SSI's. I have the case with the sump plate. There is a boss cast into the case on both sides, but one side (#1, #2, #3 side I think) looks like I could easily get in trouble by drilling too deep for an 8mm thread.
I'm sure everyone who has backdated has run across this, but does anyone have any tips or cautions? Not sure if I should use studs or just tap for a screws. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks. |

I have no experience installing SSIs, but a friend did some on his '77 s. Had no issue.
I would not go drilling into the engine case, unless someone here posts that this is normal. The risk is too great. Alan

Well, the simplest thing is to ignore this, as fastening the heater box part to the case is not necessary. Just another thing to mess around with getting things lined up.
But I took a look at a 1976 3.0 case I have handy. On each side you can safely drill down to the level of the top of the nearby casting. No need to overdo it. Me, I'd tap and use a short bolt, if I were so inclined. |

SSI installation......
The drilling for the SSI tab on the engine case during installation was never discussed or mentioned by people who had installed or used SSI. But I became curious and started asking around.
![]() The consensus I got was not to bother drilling the case because the additional fasteners that require drilling was not necessarily needed. As you can see from the above picture, one of the tabs was flattened in preparation for the drilling operation. The idea of drilling holes to the crankcase did not appeal to many and decided to leave them alone. Tony |

I wouldn't. Have SSIs on mine for the last 10 plus years and over 75,000 kms with no issues.

Thanks for your replies, but I was itching to finish my install last night, and trusted the engineers (and bean counters) who were thoughtful enough to keep the extra material in the case, apparently for this purpose. I went ahead and drilled and tapped 13-14mm deep and locked in some short studs. Worked well and SSI's are now fully supported.
