Question Which 3.6L Engine + Trans…

Quick survey time!

Some of you have seen my threads about possibly doing a 1978-86 911 with a 3.6L. I have tracked down a few engines that seem promising, but I'm curious which 3.6 people think i should go after.

Let's assume I have three engines in front of me, all with identical mileage and in identical condition. I plan to tear it apart and do a fair amount of upgrading and improvements. All things being equal, would you go for…

a 1992 964 3.6
a 1995 993 3.6
a 1996 993 Varioram 3.6

Now, what would you pair it with?

a G50-03
a G50-20
something else

Thanks in advance.

The 95. Internally balanced (the 964 3.6 has a big clunky external balancer on the back of the engine crank) and better cylinder sealing (964 often develops leaks).

I vote 95. Seems most pick this one. It doesnt have the vari induction but is a very solid motor. I picked it for that reason. Im 70% through a complete rebuild with alot of internal mods. It has the improved sealing, better crank (but most argue the rod journals are worse for racing), and all the improvements over the 964. The later 993 engine seem to be harder to swap. Im not sure if 96 is that year or the next year .... Bill V has alot of threads and knowledge on the issue.

I think the mid-range torque benefits of the Varioram make it the obvious choice.

Is there anything that has to be done to the rear deck lid to fit the Varioram, or maybe can the 964/993 rear deck kid be put on the earlier cars without modification?

There seems to not be much room in there after you cram one of these in.
