Tensioner Fitment Question
This was in the 911 area, figured the engine rebuilding section might yield some results.
Reviving a six-and-a-half year old thread because I have the same question as the one posed above - a question that went unanswered in the original thread. The original 930 tensioner/idler-arm combination had no spacers, no shims, no nothing that seems different than what I'm dealing with now, and they certainly appear to be dimensionally the same as the new pressure fed ones. But because it's been 6 months since I disassembled my engine I don't have a clear recollection as to whether this play was present with the original parts, in which case I would assume it's normal. Is the design such that the idler arm is free to "float" at the pivot point? Quote:

There is always some play there. The tensioner is fixed on location. The idler in later years had a shoulder that replaced the spacer used in the narrow topped tensioner.
The chain will keep the idler in place because the chain runs straight and the idler will center to the chain. Im not where I can measure the stack but there is play available. Bruce |

1-3 should be pretty tight. 4-6 has a little play fore and aft.
