best engine for 911sc??
Hello guys,
I own a 911 sc 1980 with an engine from a 1978 sc(cal). My mechanic replaced the head studs and fixed an oil leak from the left side of the engine. Now the leak is from the middle side and a specialist told me after trying adjusting the fuel air and oil mix that it loses oil pressure. Now i can only go up to 3 bars max and at idle is around 0.5 I have to reuild the engine to fix this oil pressure issue but i am thinking of replacing it for 2 reasons: the cost of rebuild vs getting a 3.2 motor are not that different and is worth the upgrade and 2: i will also get more power. Now.my question is: what do you siggest me to do and what motor should i go for? 3.2 or 3.3? What are the ups and downs? Thank you |

Did you have 5 bars before the Head Studs and Oil Leak repair?
Could be coincidental but the gauge or pressure sender could be on their way South.

Sure, you could buy a used 3.2 and swap it for the cost of a rebuild. But how will you know how long that engine will last until it has issues?
Bite the bullit and build what you have I to a 3.2 SS. You'll know what you have when done and will have as much as or more power than a used stock 3.2 Carrera, depending on what you build (pistons, cams, exhaust, etc.) |

Finding the right engine at the right price which has recently been rebuilt will be very expensive. The 3.0 is a great platform and you can extract power by choosing the right mods.
Read this - 3.0 rebuild - what would you do?

A 3.2 engine is really good. That does away with the cranky cis for example.
And it's an easy swap compared to a 3.6. But it's hard to know what you get, it might need a rebuild in the near future.

Thank u guys for your responses.
Ok so if i stick with what i have what are the most effective upgrades i can do to turn it into a 3.2 or even 3.3 and how much will that approximately cost? What power can i get out of it? Assume no mods done to body. Also i know that u can put a chip to increase power in 3.2 engines, will i be able to do that after the mods? Thanks |

Silly question maybe, but what do case oil leaks and broken head studs have to do with engine oil pressure? I would change the sender unit first. They are usually the cause of suspicious oil pressure readings!

First, you have a great platform for a 3.0 hot rod SC that will be stone reliable and fast. The '78 had bigger head ports that the original that came with your car. Most of your build will depend on the components you already have. If you have Mahle cylinders, you can most likely reuse them with new, higher compression pistons for JE or the like. If you really want to make it work well, consider 10.0:1 CR with twin plug heads. This set up without porting will net around 275 hp at the crank with 46 mm Webers and decent exhaust and GE 60 cams. and lots of fun to drive. I did this for around $7500 with used parts except pistons and twin plug distributor.
