911 rear main
Hi Guys.
1985 911 3.2 140,000 Rear main leak. Runs very strong Leak is only problem. Mechanic says rebuild engine ($$$$$). Replace seal ($1000+). Thoughts? |

There is things to consider in the price of $1000.
The R&R is more than half of that, the seal is $20, full retail, I don't know At this point, do the clutch which is another more than half of the quote, especially if it's suggested retail.... The only thing a Carrera engine needs at 140k is valve guides if there is no history $1000 buys a lot of tools and beer buys a lot of help when the job is done. There must be something more than a leaky RMS if your mechanic says to rebuild the motor.
Just drop the engine and do it yourself. But, $1,000 to R&R the engine is not that far off. 4 hours out and 4 hours in. Two hours to separate the trans and remove the pressure plate and flywheel. Yup, that's an all day job. At $100/hr it actually sounds like you are getting a pretty good deal. Or, do it yourself. |

But like I was saying, $1000 isn't the end, weather to do the clutch is a big add on, what's the condition of the flywheel sensors, the triangle of leaks.
If the clutch is down on wear, you might need to spend the grand again shortly. Bruce |

Does your mechanic know these cars? A full rebuild is expensive and often not necessary. At 90k I rebuilt mine completely. Really it needed a few seals and valve guides. I always wanted to rebuild one so I did. Everything inside looked pretty good.

If there are no other problems why a rebuild?
Is the compression / leak dwn ok? If so, - install new or relined disk, t/o bng and rms. . done Dont make problems. PS If the mechanic or you do not know these cars......dont be quick to blame RMS. dont pay to educate someone for stuff you yourself can do.
