1972 aluminium engine case. how can this be???

Hi guys,

I have had an engine sitting in my garage for a while. Now I needed the crankshaft out of it and was a little surprised of the case material. Regarding the case numbers it is a 1972 engine. I think it is a 2,4T. At least this is what the heads, shrould, carbs,... are from. It was opend/overhauld somewhere in the past. But please have a look at the pictures. This doesn´t look like magnesion, or what do you think?

Many thanks, regards

Malte

It does look like aluminum.

Porsche did make a few 7R cases in aluminum for the 2.8 & 3.0 RSR engines so I'd look at the casting numbers on the sides (just below the oil return tubes) to see what those are.

Whats the engine's serial numbers & type numbers?

Thank you Steve.

The serial number fits to a 2,4 T 6120605
The type number was very light,After cleaning it with very little sanding it was nearly gone. It was 911/51. Maybe it was a factory replacement.
The strange thing is that these are the casting numbers: 901.101.101.4R 901.101.102.3R
But like you said, it looks like aluminium...

Magnesium will shine like Aluminum when the surface oxide is removed by sanding or blasting.

Looks like a Mag case to me.

Same case I'm working on right now but slightly newer. A file over a small spot and if it sounds brittle is mag.
