Rebuilder in New York City area?

Just bought a '99 Carrera w/ 28K miles. My intro to Porsche ownership hasn't been smooth, but I love the car so I'm determined to whip it into shape.

Bottom line, there's milkshake in the coolant reservoir, and I have to top up the oil every day. My mechanic (whom I trust) flushed the thing out a zillion times, but the problem hasn't gone away. He says the engine is shot and needs to be rebuilt by a Porsche specialist. Asking around turns up the notion that it's either a cracked head, cracked cylinder, or slipped cylinder.

So I need a good rebuilder in the NYC area. Actually I'll go anywhere between Boston and DC, but would prefer to stick close to home. My impression is there are a lot of sharks out there, so I'd love to get people's input about shops they have experience w/ and trust.

Check with Robbie & Provost motorsports in Bordentown NJ. He's a former Porsche dealership mechanic that opened his own shop. He's heavily involved in the local PCA region and still does some work for the local dealership when it's a very involved warranty job and they can't tie up a bay for an extended period. He knows his watercooled stuff.

Cool, thanks. 2 other shops I've read about are Bodymotion in Ocean Township, NJ and PowerTech in Rockaway, NJ.

cost?

Thanks for the recommendations.

Can anyone give me a very vague ballpark sense of how much an engine rebuild costs?

Peter Dawe in Stroudsburg, PA.

Cost? Impossible without knowing what's wrong. You have oil in the coolant, this means a cracked head, and once you get the engine open who knows what else you will find.

A lot of the guys over here are just dropping in "new" M96 units...often cheaper than repairing a knackered one.....I did a load of research on the M96 when I had a '98 Carrera (3.4 of course)....the 3.4 was particularly prone to hairline cracking at the top of the 2 middle cylinders...which would then draw water into the cylinder, with inevitable hydraulic-ing upon next startup. This then remove a V shaped chunk from the top of the cylinder.

IIRC, Charles @ LNE has a cylinder solution....over in the UK, there's a guy called Nick Fulljames (YouTube him, lots of vids of him building Peter Morgans 72/73 engine) He used to work for AutoFarm, and developed a fix kit for them...he's since left and set up his own company called RedTek, focussing on the air-cooled stuff, but may be another option...he's certainly very knowledgeable, as is a guy called Barry Hart at Hartech. If you go onto PistonHeads.com, then search for Hartech in the Porsche forum, you'll uncover a wealth of very detailed threads that Barry has written (he also covers the IMS and RMS issues with the M96). If I were in your position, he would be my number 1 "phone a friend"

HTH
Spencer.

PS - appreciate you're over in the US...recommendations really meant as reading-up meterial for you.

PPS - I dont think I'd be using the car in that state....you're *probably* on borrowed time. Your rads/pipes are going to need a whole load of decontamination as well, once you've cleaned the engine out (or replaced it)

My concern is what I get if my wrench drops in a new (or "new") engine. Perhaps it won't be an issue and he'll be able to rebuild the current one - we'll see.

I recommend Bavarian Rocket Science in Albany, they do all my mechanical work. They now service my Roadster and I am dropping my brother's 87 Carrera off there on Monday.

I think you should give Rick DeMan a call, 700 Bradley Hill Road, Blauvelt, NY. He does some impressive work.

I have been in this shop and it's very nice. They are a known Pcar shop in the area.
