Transmission 'chatter' - time for a rebuild?

Hi all,

I'm noticing what I would call transmission or gearbox 'chatter' in lower revs when driving my '87. Once the revs come up and the engine and trans are under load the 'chatter' immediately goes away.

I'm thinking it's time for my g-50 to be refurbished. 117K on the clock. What do you guys think and what am I potentially looking at here?

thanks!

Jim

When was the last gear oil change? If it's been awhile, I would start there. 117k doesn't seem like a lot of miles for a G50 (or a 915 for that matter).

Jim,

Based on experience, your transmission may not need a thing (unless the syncros are weak @117K). The noise you hear is 100% normal and due to backlash so you only hear it at low RPM.

If its not grinding when you select 2nd or 3rd gear on the up or downshift, just keep driving it and save your money for when you DO need a rebuild.

The G50 is notorious for bearing grumble as they continue to get older. Agreed with Steve. Keep on going until it has more immediate needs related to crunchy gear selection.
