911 and 915 Differential same?

Hi there,

just being far away from my workshop and stock a question strikes my mind which i hope you can answer:

901 gearboxes and 911('70-'72) had different differentials.

How about 911 and 915? Do the diffs have the same outer dimensions, i.e. are they interchangeable?

Thanks and greets,

Robert

As far as I know the 911 and 915 differentials are interchangable.

i agree ... they did have different style splines early (coarse) vs late (fine) but can be interchanged if they have the appropriate shafts.

Yes and no. '72-74 915 with 7:31 cwp uses the same differential as a mag case 901(69 only),911(7071)&914 gearbox.

When they went 8:31 the ring gear offset changed. The course spline middie differential is not a direct fit.

Great info.
so i would need an early 915 (i assume the non upgraded one with the uneasy input shaft seal exchange) to be able to interchange said 911 diff?
Thanks and greets,
Robert
