Porsche Crest 97 C4S Engine Rebuild

As a constant reader of the forum, with little to contribute, and selfish user of everyone's contributions I constantly have my hand out for help in pleasuring my C4S. Sheepishly with hat in hand I find myself once again requesting assistance from the generous forum members for my little Smurf. Last summer with member help I redid all four shafts and CV joint, added Bilstien shocks, two ball joints, Fabspeed exhaust, and one steering tie rod. WOW!! Thank you, all. Now I must embark on the nightmare of an engine rebuild. Why? Because the engine was smoking and smelling of burnt oil and Scott Finlay Porsche, Vertex and the Porsche Collection said I needed a value job, in their estimation. $12 -18K!!! There we are my fellow pelicaneers. Hope I may count on your assistance, yet again. I own a full set of Porsche manuals, and every repair book available including a 964 rebuild DVD, Yellow Garage DVD, YouTube Clip, a King James Bible and Rosary. And, in addition a rebuild kit, Porsche special tools, (1500lbs) wheel cart, (2000lbs) engine stand with Porsche engine holder and a Max Jack lift. However, I'm still missing the requisite brains and experience required. Currently the engine is almost ready to be lowered with the exception of three issues. 1. How to remove and disconnect the throttle from engine. 2. How to disconnect (and or remove?) starter from the transmission. 3. Disconnect (and remove?) Slave Clutch (do-hickie) from transmission. Well there you have it (for the moment). After which I will need to know a great deal more in repairing what ever it is that is causing the smoking and minor right side chain guard oil leak. Please Please, as a special request avoid using acronyms, initials, short speak for engine parts, make believe you are speaking with a gorilla at all times (refer to early: Run Dick Run See Jane Jump, readers). Seriously, I need help and so grateful for any assistance. Bill

pcarworkshop has a good list of procedures to assist you.

Baum tools should have all of the timing tools you will need.

Things to do while you are in there
SAI Valve
Inspect the throttle cable
Rear main seal
Inspect clutch for wear
Plug wires and plugs
Send out an oil sample
Lifters (known to have the seals dry out)

Others will add more.

Jim
