83 SC clutch adjustment-actuation problem

The clutch and cable are new, and I cannot get proper adjustment or pedal movement. There is a bit of adjustment left at both ends of the cable, but even with the pedal at about 1/3 of it's correct height its extremely hard and feels as if something might break with more pressure applied. I did have an extremely difficult time getting the motor in and fork engaged...used a flexi light camera thru the starter opening to get what I thought was proper engagement. On first attempt the fork was on the wrong side of the bearing, which was discovered only after tightening the motor/trans screws.

I'm thinking the problem lies in the fork position...could it have bent when originally installed incorrectly, and if not, can I gain enough room to correct the problem by just lowering the motor slightly and moving it back some? Also, any tips or tricks for engaging the fork and release bearing correctly will be appreciated.

Incidentally I've done clutches on my earlier 911's with 3 litre motors and 915 gearboxes with no problems..but they had Webers and access was way easier.

On an 83 there are 2 levers at the transmission. Take them both off. The spring one, top, is an idler lever. The lever will freeze on to the vertical and not idle.
You might need heat to pull it off. Clean the vertical shaft and antiseize Clean inside the arm and reassemble. This should make the clutch adjust right and ease of operation.

Hi Bruce,
and thanks for responding so quickly. I know about the levers..had them off when the motor was out . I removed the lower lever and repositioned it but the angle is wrong..too much clearance. I'm thinking the lever did not go into the release bearing groove..again Really hate to pull the whole lump out again and was hoping someone knows if the motor will slide back enough to give enough clearance to get the fork into the groove without dropping it completely.

Just a point, if your not engaged in the TOB and you have everything closed up you probably have deformed the fingers. The deformation is open the fingers above the stock size of 75 mm. More it needs to be replaced.
Look with the engine lowered, to left side of trans bell housing with a mirror and light. There is a port you can look into and see the TOB and top finger. Let you know if you're engaged.

Thanks for that info Bruce. I'll didn't know about the port..was going through the starter opening, which did not give great view. Will check it out tomorrow and let you know.
