While the fan and housing is out

Most of a year ago I picked up a long block 3.0 and had the heads done. Put them back together as a sub assembly and set them on a shelf.
By late September/ early October I found myself in a wheel chair with a bad back.
Operation in January, by April I can get out of the house with just a cane.
Waiting on the powder coating for fan and housing I started projecting.
Will be an 1982 long block with bearings, chains, resealed, rings, ramps., etc.
I'm so glad to be back on the projects.
Bruce

Stdxstd polished crank

New rod bolts and nuts holding the GT3 rod bearings

Getting the chains out

I can't believe I didn't get a picture of the loaded crank..

New mains laid iinto the bottom getting finishing touches. Just need the seals for the oil pump.
Picture of the crank loaded up, 574 to seal with, good to close up.

Bruce, you have a cross drilled crank but no bearing enhancement?

It happens. If you want help grooving the bearing we can do that for you with a one day turn-around.
If not already completed, it's a good idea to open the oil feed hole from the main oil galley.

That said: if it's just a low rpm street motor, I'm not sure the mod is needed so you might opt to just leave it......

Just building back stock but I did spend the money so I think I'll open it back up and practice grooving some old bearings until I'm happy with the product.
I think I'll pass on drilling the case, but I like the idea.

I had the piston and cylinders on, pulled them yesterday so I'm close to breaking it open and fixing the bearing for oil to the crank.
This will be complete as a long block, could be a great candidate for 2.7 replacement if I were to install the clockwise distributor drive while I have it opened. 2.7 distributor, 3prong CD, and a set of Webers with 9.3 compression, excellent street motor.

Relief cut

Got the engine opened today and cut the relief for the oil to the center of the crank that I overlooked while assembling

What's the purpose of cutting a groove in your center bearing? More lube?

The purpose of cross drilling is to promote additional oil flow to the #2 and #5 rod bearing by filling the crank from the # 4 main bearing as well as the #1 and #8 bearings.
The groove is designed to allow the oil to flow continuously as the crank rotates.

We groove the bearing using a simple fixture we designed for the lathe.
