Cylinders came to me with pistons/rings in them--what should I do?

Another rebuild question--there will be zillion more coming and eventually I'll start a new thread documenting the process.

This is off a fresh rebuild where another rod bearing failed. Parts came to me from my mechanic with pistons with a fresh set of rings on them. Can I use them in this state? I went through the formal ring seating process before I took it to the track for several sessions. Engine was strong and no smoke. I'll probably run a leakdown when I get the heads on to confirm. Thanks for any recommendations/tips.

Yes, if they were set up, IMO this is the best way to install. Are the wire locks installed on one side of each piston?

are you referring to the c-clips? I''m not sure but don't think so. Those look like fun to install.

another question--should I remove the pistons from the cylinders so I can include them in the balancing process? or will this screw up how the rings have seated?

I assumed from your first question that these were new rings and an appropriate hone on the cylinders. If these are the original rings and the cylinders are in good shape, I'd replace the rings and in the process weight balance and match your pistons and rods. And yes, the little c shaped piston pin retainers.

these were new rings prior to the last rebuild that failed from spun rod bearing so less than a couple thousand miles on them if that. the rings had a handful of short track days on them at a DE. I don't think the cylinders were honed though probably just inspected and reused.

JonT,

Keep the cylinder, piston, and piston rings in their current positions. That would leave you the connecting rods, rod bolts & nuts, and wrist pins to balance the weight.

I personally would be very reluctant to leave the pistons as-is in the cylinders if I was rebuilding an engine due to a spun bearing. Bearing debris gets in all sorts of places quite quickly.

You have to be very thorough in cleaning up the entire engine assembly in order to avoid having some residual bearing debris cause damage to your freshly re-rebuilt engine.

Just my personal opinion.........

My experience with dissembling a low-time engine and putting it back together with the same Pistons, rings and cylinders was that I had to work to re-seat the rings again when I got it back on the road. This was despite being very careful about everything going back in the exact same position.
