Best air cooled engine builder?

Regardless of cost name your choice for the best hot rod street motor builder (3.6)

Cajundaddy 07-15-2015 11:09 AM

It's not rocket science and there are a bunch of excellent builders with winning race cars in SoCal.

A short list:

Jae Lee at Mirage
Kinnenger at Black Forest
Dwain at Vision
Tyson Schmidt Pro Motorsports
Tony Callas Callas Rennsport

All of them build winning motors that don't scatter parts.

You say regardless of cost, would you cast your net wider and consider builders across the US?

Some great builders on this forum, Henry's already been mentioned, Steve Weiner, Chris Carroll @ TurboKraft loves his hotrod builds and is extremely well respected, in fairness more known for his crazy turbo builds (and a pal, so of course a biased opinion) - from what I hear there's some great shops on the East coast as well

Never know...have another project in IL so nothing ruled out. Think I can find a quality builder out west ..... But always open...

Not sure if the comment about rocket science is really justified, afterall there are a lot of ways to build these engines wrong, its only the free expert advise on here that has made it way easier for the average guy in his garage....without that advise there would be many with scattered parts EVERYWHERE.
Have done so many builds on BMW,VAG group cars with great results but I don't consider these engines easy.
The builders on here that give there time for free should be considered as the best choices IMO, ;);) love it or leave it.

I am sure all listed are very good...but it is hard to beat supertec for a hot rod. 12 years later...in a different car (original was totaled), mine still runs and starts like a Toyota...yet accelerates like a scalded dog.

Awe, shucks. Thanks Buddy SmileWavy

Ed pink?

What about Ed Pink..I understand he now builds the motors for Singer? Anyone else been successful at building a air cooled 4.0?

Henry Schmidt 07-22-2015 06:26 AM

Here is a special purpose 4.0 liter we built for a customer.
After 200 hrs of hard off road competition, the engine was freshened up. It was amazing to see how well it held up.
Even the ty rods and valves showed little sign of wear.

Hi Henry,

Was this the 4.0 Supertec built for a sand rail? good to see it holding up under those conditions.

Do you have an estimate as to what this type of build could achieve is set up for a higher RPM redline, larger port heads, ITB's, etc. more typical of a fast road/track day 911?

Thanks!
Steve

Bob Hindson Racing in Kansas City Mo. did assembly for me for my restoration of the Ragland 911 powered class 1 off road race car. We ran 1349 miles in Mexico without a flaw. All the consulting and parts were handled by William Knight performance. His set ups on the cams and weber 46 IDA worked perfect. Ragland Woodstuff single seater restoration | Page 3 | race-deZert. I put a Cox exhaust the was fitted to the car by the designer of it himself.
